If you get higher score in Step 1 and get US LoRs and do USCE and fortify your CV and pass the CS from first attempt and get connections with US physicians, you will have a descent chance of getting matched.

Hi Khaled-Diwan!

We agree with StepTaker, and also recommend that everyone get USCE/US LoRs to improve their chances. Also, consider community programs, and programs such as Internal Med and Family Med, as these are sometimes more flexible.

Good luck!

Hi, I got 85 in step2 CK and still matched in pathology. I had 2 US LORs and 3-mnth research experience at MGH, an affiliate hospital of Harvard. I also had few publications in indexed journals.

Khaled,

u got my message wrong. It was not that I didnt match in clinical programs and therefore took pathology out of compulsion. I took pathology by choice. In fact, I applied only for pathology residency. This is bcoz I have already completed postgrad study in pathology from my home-country,i.e., India, and I was interested only in pathology.

What I meant was - that with USCE/US LORs/US research experience/publications, u can circumvent your poor CK scores. Thats what happened to me, at least.

FYI, usmle scores ARE important, BUT they are not everything. I know a friend of mine who didnt get any uni program in IM although his scores were 99/99/92.

Hope this helps.
