Default fm for old imgs

Hello everyone. I an an IMG 2001 grad. I wanted opinion of members on this forum regarding applying for 2015/2016 match.
I did my post-graduation in emergency medicine (MCEM,UK degree) in 2013.
My USMLE scores step1 221 and 2ck 236. Yet to take CS and step 3. I do not have any USCE . I plan on doing observerships. How many months observership is useful. I have to be honest initially I wanted to apply to em/im programs but is not possible due to many reasons esp YOG. I am not applying due to FM being a spare option. I tried gaining as much information from this and other usmle forums.
I dont know if US green card is looked upon as a strong point or not.
I have a US doctor who is also frm my home country and she convinced it is a good option. I believe there is option of doing fellowship in EM after finishing FM residency.
Since I am married I was thinking of giving it a try for 2015/2016 residency season.
I would appreciate inputs from everyone anyone who is thinking of applying for FM.
Thanks.

Default i apologise

I dont mean for anyone to get the wrong idea of FM being for old IMGS. I only wanted to convey I am an old graduate and wanted everyones opinion. Initially when I applied residency in my home country I really did not know anything about emergency medicine but really loved it.
Thanks.

-a UK degree is very good. If you have physician work experience in the UK as an ER doc, that's a good advantage.

My USMLE scores step1 221 and 2ck 236.
-pretty good scores!

Yet to take CS and step 3. I do not have any USCE . I plan on doing observerships. How many months observership is useful.
- I think that the duration of observerships is not as important as the type/quality of USCE. One month is not a bad time to aim for, but it's hard for me say. Some do an observership for much longer. In the end, what you get out of an observership is exposure to the US medical system as well as (hopefully) letters of recommendation. I wrote an article about the different options for USCE that you may find helpful.

I have to be honest initially I wanted to apply to em/im programs but is not possible due to many reasons esp YOG.
- are you being dissuaded from applying to EM/IM because of YOG? It's really difficult to generalize your chance because of YOG. In general, programs do prefer younger grads for sure, but if you have a lot of work experience (eg. you are an attending in EM) then I wouldn't necessarily rule out EM, especially if you like it and want to be an EM physician. Same with IM.
-do you have any gaps in education?
- you might want to browse some NRMP data to see what that shows regarding number of IMGs matched into those specialties by USMLE scores etc. You can access it here.

I dont know if US green card is looked upon as a strong point or not.
- Yes, if you have a greencard that is a massive plus. More programs will become available to you.

Good luck!

Default @stepstoresidency

thanks for your encouraging words. I am strongly considering 2015-2016 residency match season a try.
I was divided whether I should pursue my EM career which I also love and doing reasonbly well.
I read somewhere FM doctors can pursue fellowship in EM. And both FM and EM treat a whole variety of patients which I love.
Thanks.
