Maybe because in general they get paid less comparing to other specialties.

Arrow It should not be ...

It's generally perceived that pediatricians make less money than other specialists (even less than family doctors).

Therefore, people tend to avoid pediatrics as they want higher salaries when they finish residency.

However, this is not completely true for several reasons:
  • Pediatric subspecialists for example pediatric cardiologists and pediatric gastroenterologists may have incomes comparable to their adult physician counterparts.
  • Pediatric primary care is one of the most needed specialties in USA and therefore peds may see many more patients than what physicians see and this can compensate for the less-pay per visit.
  • Obama and the Democrats and the new federal trend is to support primary healthcare more than advanced healthcare and pediatircs is considered primary healthcare and therefore you might see more incentives for peds in the near future.
  • The scope of pediatrics is increasing year after year. Now that we have sports medicine, pediatric ObGyn, genetics, ...etc

For the above reasons, pediatrics is not that (unwanted) anymore and in my personal opinion I think it will be as competitive as Internal Medicine (perhaps even more competitive).

Thanks steptaker for throwing your opinion. Do you think that in the near future there will be more positions available for pediatrics and how is the chance of IMG to get matched into combined degree like Peds/Genetics ? I read the 2009 match report that 100% IMG get matched into this program.

Yes, I do believe that there will be more pediatric position as near as next matching season.
As for peds/genetics, am not really sure how IMG-friendly it is. One thing I know for sure that it's very liked and much wanted by AMGs which in effect makes it less IMG-friendly than others.
Perhaps, the stats you looked at does not really represent the IMG friendliness of peds/genetics that's because which IMGs apply for it? They must be very highly qualified and focused on peds/genetics, it's not a mainstream choice so that we can forecast from its statistics.
