Surgery Vascular Surgery for an IMG!

Hi everyone..
i need some advice on residency.. i am interested n pursuing surgery for my residency.. i am an IMG graduated in 2008..my step 1 score is 241/99, i am awaiting my CS results

i am interested in pursuing vascular surgery.. however at the time of applying through eras this year i will only have some volunteer experience at a free clinic.. i am not sure whether or not it will count as USCE.. i live in southern cali therefore there is very little scope for any externships..plus the i m on an H4 visa which does not allow me to work yet..so all i can do is volunteer as i prepare for Ck
i plan on giving my CK by late august..so tht i hav my resullt my mid sept..

now.. i need some advice on whether or not i shud go ahead and apply for vascular surgery positions this year.. how hard will it b to find a spot wihtout any major clinical experience..
or should i apply for a transitional year and then be on a lookout for vascular surgery next year...

what are my chances of matching this year in transitional year with only a volunteering experience

what are the potential externships i can do which will facilitate a residency in vascular surgery

are there any IMG friendly vascular surgeries??

i kno these are too many questions.. i will really appreciate any help
thanks in advance
shice

Stop Some info for you

There's no vascular surgery residency, there's only fellowship
See this
http://www.nrmp.org/fellow/match_nam...lar/about.html

You have to finish surgery residency first.

For IMGs, they usually go into surgery after finishing prelim surgery year, transitional year is difficult to get.

You must have some USCE before applying.

Yes. There's 5 years Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Programs, they call it 0+5, which means you start right away with a the vascular department and your PD is the vascular surgeon.
The other option is a followship, they call it Traditional 5+2, in which you go to vascular fellowship after finishing 5 years general surgery during the five years your PD is the general surgeon and during the 2 years your PD is the vascular surgeon.

Both options are good, though, the integrated path is two years shorter.

The Integrated Vascular Surgery residency is extremely difficult to get for IMGs while the other traditional path (5+2) is not impossible for IMGs.

Hi..

Im IMG from India. I have graduated in 2008 and will be finishing my residency in general Surgery in this year. My doubt is:

Should I apply for Preliminary Residency?? what are the chances of getting Categorical general Surgery residency without preliminary??

Or Is it a better option to apply for fellowships and then try for Residency??

Thanks in advance
