Certificate AAMC ID No. in LoRs

What is AAMC ID number?
Does it need to be included in every letter of recommendation?

Default It's not mandatory

The AAMC ID number will be assigned to you when you sign up in ERAS.

You cannot get it before registering in ERAS.

It's not mandatory that you put your AAMC ID in the letter of recommendation.

The official ECFMG guidelines about LoRs here http://www.ecfmg.org/eras/lors.html did not mention such a requirement.

Nevertheless, it would be better if you include an AAMC ID number in your LoR, this is because it would be easier for residency programs to track your application.

Certificate AAMC ID no in LoRs

Hi people,

I plan to apply for the 2012 match via ERAS. I have three LORs from physicians in the U.S. At the time of my clerkship I did not have an AAMC ID. Therefore its not mentioned in the letters. In two of them its not mentioned that I did not waive my right to see them. Can i still submit these letters? Do I need to attach the 'Cover sheet' and the 'DSF' with them ?

Please advise,
Thanks a lot

You don't need the aamc id or usmle id on the LOR. you need them on the dsf which will be sent with them. you don't need cover letter unless the LOR writer is sending it waived directly from his office.

The letters don't need to mention that you didn't waived your rights because they are already in your hands.

please let me know if you have any further concerns regarding the LORs.

Thank you very much for the reply. I contacted ERAS earlier. I received a reply today.
Here's the e mail-

Thank you for contacting ERAS Support Services at ECFMG.

You may submit those LoRs to ERAS Support Services. Your AAMC number should be on the Letters of Recommendation (LoR), however, we will accept them without the identifying number.

ERAS Support Services strongly urges you to include a completed Cover Sheet for each LoR you are submitting. This document confirms the identification of your LoR: the letter writer, the speciality and the applicant. It also serves as a waiver sheet, verifying whether you want to waive your right to see the letter after the application process. The AAMC ID number is automatically generated on the Request for Letter of Recommendation/Cover Sheet that must accompany the LoR.

So I'm a little confused. Are they saying the AAMC ID "MUST" be there??
Please reply.
Thank you

Last year it was not a must. Many applicants were sending only the dsf with aamc id on it. They say that to make their job easy, I agree with them but again it is not a must. Anyway all what you have to do is to print these two forms (cover letter and dsf )out and put your aamc id on the top of the LOR (or just ask the LOR if waived to add it there)and send them.

So do u think it will be right for me to write the AAMC ID myself in hand on the LORs I already have ? or should I write the ID only on cover sheet ...
I'm sorry about all the questions , but I don't want to do anything wrong .
Thank you so much.

You can just add it to the cover letter, but writing it on the LOR shouldn't harm. You may ask ecfmg/eras to be on the safe side: E-mail: eras-support@ecfmg.org
Phone: (215) 966-3520

Hi guys

Where should aamc id be written on the LOR if it is not included in the letter by the writer?
Should I write it on the back page top right hand corner? or front page top right hand corner?

Where should aamc id be written on LOR by the writer ? below your name?

Thank You for your help!

You cannot write anything on the original typed LoR. Leave it as it is.
The DSF and coversheet would include your AAMC ID No.

The letter writer can mention your AAMC ID no. just next to your name or right below it,

Examples:
John Smith, MD; AAMC ID No. 12345678
or
John Smith, MD
AAMC ID No. 12345678
