Default Step 3 Vs USCE Vs Research

So a little about me, I'm a US IMG, YOG 2013, Step 1 256, CK 257, CS waiting on the results.

I don't have any substantial USCE and I'm still working on it. Would it be better if I take my Step 3 before interviews begin, instead of working on getting observerships or getting into research which may or may not work out?

If a good Step 3 score is going to make it more likely to get an interview and matching, that's what I'll plan on doing with my time from now.

Thanks!

hi congrats on the great scores..but i think USCE in specialty of preference is most important in application, u can try and do research while doing rotation..publication will look good but I still think USCE is more important.
also many people take step 3 during residency so plan accordingly

Yeah if I can't get USCE, I thought I might as well take Step 3. Hopefully something works out. Thanks.

USCE and LORs is vital to get interview , you would have better opportunities if you have your step 3. Research of course is important , but if you are running out of time and or money, focus on the s3 and USCE

With your scores + you have just finished medical school last year! You don't even need USCE/Research/Step 3. You will definitely get interviews, in IM, FM, Psyc, Paeds, etc...

If you are going after surgery, especially Ortho, Neuro - then yes research and USCE is then strongly recommended, and I would not worry about step 3 at all. You are NOT an old graduate, program directors are not expecting you to have step 3 at all.

In my opinion: you have got this in the bag! Congratulations in advance.

Thank you so much! That is very encouraging. I would just like to do something in the next few months since I have the time. As long as it doesn't hurt me I think taking Step 3 is okay, would you agree?

I agree with you. If you have free time now and would like to improve your application further, I would lean more towards USCE/LOR (if you can get it of course). If that is not possible then doing step 3 is your next best option.

If you don't mind me asking, what speciality are you interested in applying to?

Hope all goes well for you,
