Question IM is hard to get into?

Hi everyone

I noticed that all IMGs apply to IM. Does this mean that IM is just as competitive as plastics/derm/opth/surgery etc and is difficult to attain? Also since the minimum score requirement is rising every year! I'm not going to apply before 2013 and I'm wondering if I should forget about IM residency

Thanks

It will never be as competitive as the surgical specialties or dermatology or radiology, this is because of simple reason, less income

But everything is getting harder year after year, this is because thousands and thousands of IMGs are applying more and more year after year.

Nowadays, scoring less than 90 means forgetting about internal medicine residency

Things are going toward more competition in the last few years because of the number of unmatched applicants who are reapplying each year. Scores have a role in some programs which blindly set filtering criteria highly. However there too many other programs that take into consideration other criteria as a priority as previous residency back home, externships in the States, LORs, graduation year....

I had about 50 applicants last year who matched with scores less than 85 who had one or more of the above positive criteria. Some of them were green card holders which was a big factor in securing more interviews.

Don't give up or feel weak at any time, you can do it, work on your profile and apply widely and to MULTIPLE specialties.

goodluck

Thanks applicant guide for the encouraging words but I guess it is ok to be realistic. Everyone is applying and there are limited positions and AMGs are chosen over IMGs. Very understandable. Thanks again!

Not really, AMGs are preferred over IMGs in most programs that's true but not true for some programs where there are no AMGs as in westlake resurrection in illinois or LICH in brooklyn for example.

There are many programs to which AMGs don't apply because of the "harsh and tough" environment whether in the hospital or surrounding.

If you applied to all the IMG friendly programs with a good profile regardless your scores you will get some interviews and I know this from hundreds of applicants whom I interact with each year.
