In the General tab under MyERAS, for permanent mailing address, is there any advantage in giving a US mailing address over a mailing address from back home (India)?

I agree whole purpose of USCE for us mostly is to get good LOR/s.
Nothing is enough for us. and anything can turn out to be enough in the end. So please without desperation everybody has pitfalls. I am one big puddle but we all should give it a good try and with cold mind do correct things. Worrying won't help. I thought we should have these IV lists form previous year match thread here:

I was looking at the list from MAR..It has about 283 IM programs (that sponsor both J1 and H1)..So, was wondering how many programs do people normally apply to.

It depends on every individual but what i have seen here on the forum is that few people apply to more than 150 IM programs and few people apply to less than 50.
And majority of them apply between 50 and 150.

Correct if I am wrong.

I agree 50 is minimum. I just went through 15 programs today and I am deadly exhausted.

I think i should at least decide how many programs to apply to..I haven't started doing anything regarding the application so far..Its just so tough to do rotations and study at the same time..I have a lot of respect for people that work and take tests at the same time...Anyways, I was thinking if i should apply to 150 or 200 programs..Is 200 a lot?? Would applying to 50 more programs increase my chances of matching or not really? Thank you!!

P.S-I have very average credentials, hence the apprehension!

Default J1 visa required

I was just browsing through a few programs on Freida and I noticed many programs stated that they require non US IMGs to have J1 visa. Does that mean we need to have J1 visa at the time of interview to be eligible for that program ?
Btw I have passed Step 2 CS, Step 1 and 2 in higher 240s 2 months of USCE and 2011 grad. Need visa.

I wanted to know if we should buy match a resident right now or should we wait until August so that it is updated? I tried Frieda and I wanted to puke looking at so many programs and most requiring 3-6 mohths of usce. I'd have 2 months usce at most with two us LoRs and two from my home country on the basis of internship year. I too have pretty average stats. So I think Im gonna apply to many places. How many I don't know yet. Just wanted to know if I should get MaR as yet?

You have it until January and believe me you will go over and over again with programs so the sooner you start better.

I have a question does home country residency count as work experience too together with education? I filled it in education section and thinking to write it down in work experience also on ERAs application or not

Thanks for the reply. I'd buy it soon then. Residency comes under education but MO ship/internship/house job comes under work experience I think. What about electives and observership?

I googled it. High school isn't included but only higher education. And since some non us systems don't have any college so they'd write none in education section.

Start contacting any Dr friends and just observe at medical offices. any observership will count (something is always better than nothing) you can do at least one in august (can be partime next to the one you've already scheduled) and another in september (full time or part time)

make sure you get LORs for these observerships even if unwaived. you can always upload an extra LOR to your application (to a total of 4/application).

Just realized I didn't post my credentials yet so here goes:

IMG/ Green Card
Step 1: 205 first attempt
Step 2: 229 first attempt
Step 2 CS: pass first attempt
Step 3: taking it tomorrow!
2 yrs of USCE (all observerships except for 1 clerkship), 6 private offices, 1 hospital, 2 medical groups.
LORs from all trainings (I can only upload 4 so I have to choose carefully!)

Plan on applying to about 120-150 IM and may be 50-60 Peds.

repeat applicant.

Most programs offer to take ACLS and PALS ( if needed) during orientation before internship starts.

we have discussed MAR in upper quotes. You cannot rely on anything. You have to choose individually for yourself.

MAR brings you programs out of the big pool that are good to you.
So far it has done things for me and they give you answers to the questions that are not posted on websites after speaking with coordinator.
There are no clear answers to every our question neither on MAR nor on the website. so in the end I will clarify my questions with some programs.

Any Experience with Combined Med/Peds program? I am p;anning to apply to couple of them. Also As I have heard it should not be a problem to apply to IM and Combined Med/Peds in the same institution. like you can apply to categorical and preliminary in same program. If anyone has better information please..

About personal statement what's should be the word count? I tried 10pt courier new font and it has already gone to page 2 with only 500 words as yet. Does anyone know of the website where we can check after printing the personal statement?

Try staying under 1.5 pages. the key is quality not quantity. You can wow them with just one page.

Seems like I'm a little late to the party. Lol
Good Luck everyone!

How important are publications and research experience? What else can I do in the next two months to improve my chances? I've been trying to get more USCE but I have 4 LORs (3 US, 1 India) already so I don't see the point of hanging around a private clinic, but I might end up doing that if all else fails.

I considered taking Step 3, but been advised not to and just mentally prepare myself for interview season instead.

Your chances are great and don't need any improvement sit back and chill. It's just a matter of time before you match

I am in same position, although I wanted to give step 3 in sep to make myself eligible for h1b visa, but will not be able to get one as result will come out in April, but as u are citizen u don't have this issue.
I have a question is not have given step 3 going to hurt my application?

I'm not sure, of course having finished Step 3 will help since PD's don't have to think about giving you time in PGY1 for you to take it. That being said I've been told if your scores on 1 and CK are good and you don't need a visa or won't be able to take Step 3 in time for a visa, it's fine. Don't rush to take it if you don't need to.

we are all making our minds about that right now

I will not apply to lot of program because tomorrow finishes my chance to be ECFMG certified this year. But i will very carefully choose programs who has strict requirements and whom i still can at least officially satisfy.

If you have no pitfalls you should go for as much as u can. 100 would be normal and most of people do that.

The only thing that might hurt you is the lack of USCE and LORs! Man those are VITAL!! Why haven't you considered it?

and I got a permission from my mentor to start observership for a day/ weekly for another 10 months starting August

I don't think this alone will make the difference

cause they gave me strange answer when I e-mailed ERas. I guess they did not understand my Q

"If you are contacting us on the behalf of another user to upload a LoR on their behalf, please note that we do not suggest the sharing of accounts. Instead you are able to create your own AAMC account and upload the LoR on their behalf. "

So I am going on LOR portal from my AAMC account and uploading my first letter wish me luck.

By the way file size should not exceed 500 kb and it can usually be changed while scanning resolution should be 200.
OKay i have fixed one problem now another
"File page cannot exceed a maximum size of 8.5 x 11 inches"

why god why

quick loR question. please correct me for this loR sequence:

(1) you email your attending requesting for an loR
(2) attending agrees
(3) finalize the author list and sent him the request letter to be uploaded via lorp
(4) rest leave it to the attending.

now my question is: what if we have finalized the author and sent him the letter of request along with the email OR is it better to finalize after he has agreed to write an lOR via email.

its a stupid question, please i need an answer + assurance

Its not stupid we are all getting to know all those things.
You cannot send letter request with ID to your author without finalizing the lor author (s) you can finalize just one author at a time or when you are ready. the main thing in that letter request is the Letter ID which eras gives you after finalization. you can add then more

well I think we can just leave the finalized authors by themselves if the letter is not uploaded. only when the letters will be uploaded than you can assign them to specific programs even after uploading you can change the previous letter with new version. Just uploaded my first unwaived LOR. and the size is simple as that " US letter" 8,5 X 11 inches. I wish some kind soul could have helped me through this way, im glad to finally FINALIZE this letter quest.

I am working so hard at these unwaived home country LORs as if they would interest someone but anyways this will give me opportunity to make applications.

Good luck guys!

Hey all,

Do we have to finalize authors for un waived lors?

Also, where on ERAS do we write about any USCE or home country clerk ships?

Finally, I will be starting an internship next month, so where do I mention that?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance!

Yessyou have to finalize every lot. Finalization just means that the Letter ID is generated. then you upload unwaived LOR yourself.

I could not really find a place where to put in observership externship kind of experience.

Thank you for your reply tamta. My school participates in EMSWP ERAS (unfortunately) so they will be uploading everything of mine (again, unfortunately). So will I still have to finalize the authors? Can you tell me where I'm supposed to finalize that?

What do you put if the Doctor writing you a letter is not a Program director but a doctor doing private practice .You still need to put that persons credentials somewhere .
thanks

what do you mean by putting credential? I.e. them uploading lord themselves through LOR portal?

uploading depends on you waive the letter or not. I personally do not waive most of letters, because they are unable to do that. sad as it is. I prefer to have letters and upload them in a minute. although having stupid trouble with letter size which I am trying to solve somehow.

the titles of each doctor should be down their name in the letter. and of course all authors need to be finalized. so the letter has its ID. and your school or whoever uploads it .

To those who purchased the list from MAR, approximately how many programs are in your list? I have not yet purchased any list, but I can see 299 programs for IM once I input my scores etc. It,s ridiculous! Do I have to purchase something before they give me a more realistic number?

this means that you don't have any specify pitfalls like grad year cut off, failure, you have USCE and nice scores. This number will stay the same as it shows for you.

You can upload unwaived Lors but obviously if you waive your right to see them then the letter writer or school has to do it

Hey tamta,

My med school participates in EMSWP ERAS, meaning that I cannot upload my own transcript and MSPE. I initially thought I couldn't upload LORs either (I guess I was misinformed by the med school people) but I successfully uploaded 3 LORs. I hope I didn;t do something I wasn't supposed to

Quick question. If it says on a program's website "we accept J1 visas", does that mean we need to have our own visa and that the program won't be sponsoring it?

Hey my school also participates in the web portal. What they told me is that if I waive my right to see the Lor they would upload it for me or they can send it to me and I can upload it but it will obviously be considered an unwaived LoR. ....

Thank you for your reply, tamta. Some hospitals also mention "we sponsor only J1 visas", so in this case ECFMG won't be sponsoring it then I presume?

No it means that they are sponsoring J1 ONLY and not H1. Some offer both.

I'm still unclear on what J1 sponsorship means. So, some programs mention "We considering sponsoring J1 visas at our discretion" and other programs mention "We consider applicants holding J1 visa sponsored by ECFMG".

So which is it? I was under the impression that all J1 visas for residency are sponsored by ECFMG and that the residency program plays no role in that.

Default Hello

Actually it is required before residency but you need to be called for interviews in order to get residency, right?
So most of the programs are more comfortable while sending interviews to those who are already ECFMG certified at the time of application. Though it is not required before application.

Hola People!
I'm applying for 2015 too.
The whole application process stresses me out.
I'll take step 3 at the end of September and, let me tell you, I'm having A LOT of trouble focusing on this one lol. In the mean time working on LoRs, cover letter, a number of research projects....

Good Luck everyone!

Depends on a program you are applying to.

Check the interview/application requirements of each program you apply to.

Yup 5 interviews. but ECFMG was issued in Dec which counts as late, by then the programs have already selected their preferred candidates and they won't change it even if you call and say that you got certified.
Personal opion: you need to have your ECFMG before end of October to be on the safe side.

I.E CS need to be done before september 6. That is why I think is my last resort.

Although programs do state that ECFMG must be in prior to rank period or prior to starting training.. Did you apply to those that did not require ecfmg prior to application time?

can y please provide me that list if I am not asking for too much. Want to compare with mine.

If a certain program is not participating in ERAS 2015, but is taking part in the NRMP match, how does an IMG apply to such a program? Any ideas?

Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I need opinions regarding my chances of mathcing. This is what I have:

Step 1:209 first attemp.
step 2cs: pass, first attemp.
Step 2Ck: 245 first attemp
(All 3 taken on 2014)
Two months of USCE, one in Mass General and one Brighams.
1 US LOR.
ECFMG certified.
YOG 2014
Need visa.

What type of programs should I be applying? Do I have any chance in a university program?
