Default Interview season is whack

This interview season makes no sense at all. I am seeing people's scores and trying to figure out how people with worse scores than me got interviews where I didn't. Then i try to figure out how I got interviews at University hospitals where those same people got rejected.

It's been silent since mid-november.

Couple of the programs I have reached out to said they are done, I mean it seems like maybe a handful of programs will still send out interviews however I highly doubt it.

I know two of my friends (I didn't get for myself) one needs Visa and other doesn't and both are non-carribean grads got IVs at Uconn. But I have personally seen most of the matched residents there are Carribean grads. Dont' know how exactly to interpret this information.

How can your school be in the carribean but it's not a carribean school?

When AMGs talk about "caribbean schools" they usually refer to Ross, AUS or those other places that require you to do 1-2 years of clerkships in the US.

My country is in the Caribbean but my university is just a regular local medical University. My curriculum was tailored for my country.

"carib schools" are mostly meant for you to go back to the US and do a fellowship there.

Yea. My school is a Caribbean school but not a "Caribbean school" too. Now I wonder if you're from my school. If so, props to you brah. You're doing amazing with this season's match. Good luck.

Certified doesn't matter much.

Your scores should be ready by September 15 though (step 1, cs, ck).

If they are not ready on time it will harm your application A LOT.

applying on time is half the Game

It will definitely harm you.

No one can say how much.

Programs send invite of a first come, first serve basis.

October is not TOO late but it isn't ideal either.

Hi, Im not currently applying ffor the match next year. I just wanted to ask to those applying this year -in case they know a similar case- whether or not is possible to get interviews for IM with a score of 222 on the step 1?

Is it true that my chances get higher with a good score on step 2 ck (>255)?

I'm an IMG, yog 2011.

Thank you.
And good luck on the match.

Chance, of course, gets higher if u score the highest!
Regarding Step 1 score, there is nothing u can do now.
No one can tell u for sure if u ll get IVs with that score or not..
But scores r usually the first filters that most places apply..

It might it or it might not. It's hard to tell. I would definitely do it, doesn't hurt to you but it might piss them off a little bit, not to the point of not inviting yout hough.

i know people that got interviews thanks to that.

Question Robert Packer IM waiting list

Hello again fellow doctors!

I had a quick query, I'm on the waiting list to IV at Robert Packer for IM and I couldn't find much on the program.

I just wanted to ask if they ask any medical questions during the IV and the overall feel of the program.

Thanks in advance for the help! I really appreciate it and happy holidays!!

Hey guys, has anyone interviewed at university of Illinois peoria program? Or does anyone know anything about Peoria in general? Heard its a pretty small city and was wondering how miserable I would be living there. Not to say that its a miserable place (as i haven't been there) but coming from NYC I don't think it will be my scene. Also does anyone know their fellowship matches for the last 2 years (website kind of outdated)?

Thanks for any input in advance!

Most PDs dont reply, a few of the other interviewers in a few programs and 1 PD gave me a very brief reply. Dont overthink it, most people just dont reply.

I got an email from PD of the residency program where I interviewed one month back. He says that he considers me a very good candidate and valuable asset to his program. Does that really mean my probablity of matching there is high if I rank them among my top choices??? Thank you for your valuable suggestions.

It means what it says. They consider you a good candidate. In no place does it say they are going to rank you in a top spot. You should reply and tell them how grateful you are and that they are among your top choice as well.

NNothing is certain until match day however, so don't be surprised if you don't get in.

Last but not least, this is going to come in the form of a rant, so sorry about that

RANT:

PEOPLE forget about guessing if a place will rank you high or not. It simply does NOT MATTER. The way the match is designed you need to make your list in the order of YOUR PREFERENCE. Nothing else.

Even if a place ranks you n1 that doesn't mean you have to do the same. If you can't get in to the upper hospitals in your list, you will get in to that place that ranked you high with a 100% certainty.

Again make your list based on how you like each hospital. Don't think ranking a hospital higher just because they ranked you high is going to increase your chances of matching. That's just not the way it works.

Default Help regarding Observership

Hello Guys I need help. I have been looking for observership but no luck whatsoever since I have no contacts in the US. well i am planning on applying for Oklahoma State Medical Association Observership program . So with scores in 240s and with this 3 month Observership with a couple of LORs , do you guys think its possible to land some Interviews ? Im going to apply for residency this year ( September 2015 ) .Please let me know the current scenarios of Interviews with this minimal credentials .thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. So basically I just need to have the results of all the exams? Not having a paper copy wont hurt my chances? It takes 2-3 weeks to get that copy. That was the point i was worried about

yes. those credentials are good enough. you will get a couple of LORs from those observerships that will help a lot. 240+ scores are pretty good. I got some 14 interviews with 249 step 1 and only 1 observership in a private practice. No contacts.

How does it matter if you know that the program is pre match or not??? You either get called by them to prematch or you dont and wait for the match. Is it important to know beforehand? Does it make a difference?

Default GBMC code?

Did anyone try to rank Greater Baltimore Medical center? It is not showing up on the rank list in NRMP I even tried to put in the exact code? Am I doing something wrong?
I even emailed them and tried to get the correct code and entered the one they gave me and its still now showing up. Any idea as to whats going on?

Of course it matters because you will only rank programs that join the match. Also, you might want to get interviewed by prematch programs earlier, otherwise, they might fill up fast so early application is crucial.

But it doesn't matter now because the deadline was yesterday. Good luck!

Most of the info is in the signature.

USCE - All observerships in 4 different hospitals, 2 weeks each. Did not apply to programs which specifically stated they don't consider observerships as USCE.

No research or publications.

Applied to 141 IM programs, 44 interview invites, attended 16, ranked all.

I think the biggest reasons for that many invites is the citizenship status, USMLE scores and LORs.

Good luck!

Great
so generally speaking, how much % of programs don't consider observe as USCE compared to programs consider it ?

Not that many. Of course "Ivy league" places and other competitive programs demand hands-on USCE (electives, externships). However most programs with a decent number of IMGs consider observerships as USCE.

Try to get hands-on experience first, if that fails look for observerships.

I did not know LORs from observerships where taken into account...i thought only externships or student clerkships count...congratulations again...good luck with your new beginning

Try Providence hospital in DC. They had a 3 month duration externship for ecfmg certified doctors. There was a queue for a couple of months ahead, but there wasn't any fee for the externship.

Hey beka, congratulations on matching at Emory! That's so totally awesome! I'm applying in the 2015-16 match and Emory is my top choice program for certain reasons(Geography, connection). I'm an USIMG with 250+ step 1. I will have my ecfmg certificate and 3 us lors (observerships) by the application date. What would you advice to make sure to match there? Where did you rotate in Gerogia? Will highly appreciate any info from you! Thanks a bunch! (you can pm me, I won't be sharing the info with anyone if you prefer it that way)

No research or publications.

Applied to 141 IM programs, 44 interview invites, attended 16, ranked all.

I think the biggest reasons for that many invites is the citizenship status, USMLE scores and LORs.

Good luck!
Hei congrats! were all the observerships from teaching hospitals

Search Loyola Anesthesiology Probation?

I'm a CA-3 about ready to graduate from Loyola's Anesthesiology program. Just thought I should share my experience and let others form their own opinions. We recently had a meeting with the ACGME committee due to violations in our duty hours, lack of educational time, and dangers to patient safety. Its likely the Loyola Anesthesiology program will be shut down or at least put on Probation.

I've had decent training over these last few years but essentially we are treated like CRNA's. The program directors Dr. Murray and Wiisanen even require us to do all the preop work for the CRNA's cases daily so they can go home early. Additionally we relieve the CRNA's from their cases in the early afternoon while we stay until 7-8 o'clock at night almost everyday. The worst part in my experience is that the duty hours are so intense they allow for almost zero educational time. Technically we do have lectures but they are not really protected forcing us to wake up early or sacrifice our free time in order to attend. That being said, the grueling hours leaves very little time to study for boards, resulting in marginal in-training exam scores and poor matching for fellowship.

Lastly Loyola was recently bought by Trinity Heath. The new owners are pushing for more surgical volume, stretching our staff very thin. Many residents have had to work >100 hours a week in order to keep up. It has gotten so bad that the patients have been put at risk due to resident fatigue and lack of appropriate staffing. There have been several instances where there was not a resident available to respond to a code in a timely manner because the on call had to staff an extra case in the OR.

Please consider your options and do your research when choosing a residency program.

And I'd appreciate if someone summarizes the process for me, telling me not to miss points like for example, don't get late registering for eras or something like that.
Thanks for asking this question. Funny thread to watch.
