Hey, I came across two programs who accept applications starting sept 1st. Both participate in the match. Is that possible?

Maybe they are outdated? The past years application started on september 1st. This year starts on september 15

Yup most probably they're outdated because eras application opens on sept 15 and all the programs matching through NRMP and eras start sept 15.

I am purchasing the match a reisident customised list. For ppl who have experience with it pls guide me on this- My CK result is not out now. Will MAR give me a list based on just my step 1 score , cs pass now and another updated list when my CK result comes out and I am ecfmg certified? Or they give u just 1 list based on ur credentials when u purchase the list initially?

Guys, " recruiting outside the match" means we won't be able to match through ERAS in this program???

Dont know what that means. ALL programs must work through ERAS. If they dont, then they are not participating.

I have rough list of those programs. + those that don't have graduation cutoff. So there might be more which does not require ecfmg and have cutoff which may not apply to you

I also came across some programs stating Sep1 even on website. so that is true that websites may truly be outdated. and in ambivalent stuff calling or mailing is the option.

Default Chances of IM residency

Step 1 223
Step 2 211 (unfortunately)
Step 2 cs- passed 1st attempt
US IMG; in 4th year. Have LOR's

With the low step 2 ck score, is there any chance of being able to match in IM since the averages are much higher than my scores above. Any advice appreciated!!
Thank you for taking the time out and replying!!

Go to the ECFMG website. Sign in to OASIS. Go to ERAS support services. You'll have options there to upload your MSPE and transcript. Read the file requirements before uploading. (PDF, size etc)

Why do people continue to ask what are their chances for matching? Is the answer going to change their plans?? If someone says: hey you know, your chances are null. What would you do?? I bet you would try to get a second opinion, and apply anyway.

My point is. Dont waste space asking if you are going to apply anyway. We are at the doorstep of the application, if you dont apply at this point with a full credential like yours then you are an idiot. The chips are down and your hand is ready, go for it, shotgun your application to every corner of that huge country that covers half of the north american continent like everyone else is doing.

Lets use this thread for something else like sharing application lists, strategies, tips, etc.

Default USCE?

Several programs, particularly the competitive University ones have mandatory USCE requirements. Would it be advisable to apply even if we don't meet those requirements? Is it a hard and fast rule or are there always exceptions?

I don't plan on applying to those if I'm going to be filtered out even before the application reaches the PD. Any insight on this?

Thanks!

I think your application gets filtered out if you dont meet the requirements. It also happens if you dont meet the minimum number of LORs they have.

I would suggest to call or email the program about that issue if you are truly interested. They might say otherwise.

I believe so, they have separate NRMP numbers.

Many programs ask for a deparment chair letter. Even if you are IMG. My question is: Will a deparment chair letter from my home country suffice? I know its not going to be strong compared with a US deparment chair letter, but will it at least pass the filter?

I'm not sure. Some programs mention separately for IMGs that instead of a Chair letter it must be from the IM department of whatever USCE you did.

I think you only need to wait for it. Once your CK score is out. You will see a red message in your OASIS saying something like "congratulations, you are now ECFMG certified" and that you have to check your mail box for the certification, and that it can take a couple of weeks.

What do you mean ADTS doesbt show anything. It should show the LOR author name, the date when it was finalized and the date when it became available to programs. This last one only appears when the LOR has been processed, it can take some weeks.

I have been experiencing serious lag in the eras and lorp pages, probably a high influx of users and document uploading is going on and will probably increase in the upcoming weeks

Have more than 2 years research in a famous university and have more than 17 good papers and one US patent.

There are no program directors on this thread so we in all honesty don't know chances of ourselves let alone yours. Apply anyway and see for yourself. Best of luck, anyone can match.

Of course people with those creds match, just have to have a look at nrmp data. Good luck, lets do this

Just as we posted way back on the thread. Dont ask what are your chances on this thread. And all cases are unique, so even if someone has a friend of a friend with your cloned credentials that matched, things change every year. Please AT LEAST read the previous posts in the thread before posting your "what chances" question.

Seriously Guys you're ruining the thread by asking this question time and again.
They've mentioned it like 3 times right on this SAME page not to do it!
We know match season is stressful but please stop behaving like this and cooperate in making this a thread where useful info can be shared instead of asking questions to which there is no answer at all.

Hope you all match

Default Applying this year - good luck to all :)

Hello everybody, I'm late to the thread I'm afraid. Good luck to all! I'm going to put up a few questions in this forum; someone might be able to give me his/her opinion on it, which would be a great help to all of us...

1. Applying to California programs

I would like to inquire about the California PTAL requirement for application to California programs. I have initiated the application and have fulfilled all the requirements to be issued with a PTAL save one: the Social Security Number. However, it seems that one cannot get issued an SSN without a visa (with certain exceptions), and of course a visa cannot be obtained till after applying, interviewing and matching (which requires a PTAL if applying to a California program).

I went to my US Embassy and was told that the SSN can only be issued to foreigners from within the USA. It is however impossible for me to leave my country at the moment. Nonetheless, I have a PTAL application status letter which I can upload to ERAS in lieu of the actual PTAL letter. Essentially I am but one step away from getting the PTAL, but can't quite get that done by the time I interview. I will be visiting the US in November for interviews and will be working on obtaining an SSN expeditiously at the same time.

Do you think that, based on the above situation, my application for California programs would be automatically excluded from consideration?

2. Applying to the more "exclusive" programs

I am an IMG looking at potential programs to apply to, and aiming for an academic/university hospital program. Because sending an application to each program costs precious money, I only want to apply to programs where I will not be automatically excluded based on their administrative requirements.

So here's a bit of background about myself. I have had good scores (262/264/pass; all first attempt; step 3 pending) and have 5 months of US Clinical Experience (direct patient care) in University Teaching Hospitals, with many strong LORs. I graduated in 2011, 4 years ago. I have 7 publications in peer-reviewed journals (with a couple more currently under consideration) and co-authored one book chapter, and had multiple oral and poster presentations in international meetings. I believe I would be a fairly competitive candidate for an academic/university hospital residency program.

My question is, for example, even if a program states on their website that the application criteria for IMGs is a graduation date not more than 3 years ago or six months of USCE, would they be willing to "bend the rules", so called, to accommodate candidates that are otherwise competitive?

Thanks so much for your help!!!

About the PTAL I dont know anything since I am not interested in applying to california.

About your second question. You have excellent credentials and university programs would be very interested in your application. You would have to check each one individually and contact them to know for sure if they would be willing to bend their rules a little bit. I think most would.

Note that some programs say: PREFERABLY 3/5/8 years since graduation. And others clearly state it as a REQUIREMENT. These programs will most likely filter out your application, but as I said, your best bet is to call them personally to ask.

Your 3 months observer in palliative care count as USCE in many programs. Get LORs from anesthesia as well, and make sure they describe that they know you and how you work. They will not be super strong as US lors, but they will help.

I have heard of people matching without US LORs. But they probably had stellar scores and very strong home LORs. There are many programs that put in their requirements "NO USCE REQUIRED". It would be ilogical to ask for US LORs if you dont expect them to have rotated ever in the US.

I know of two residents who matched to university programs without any US Letters of Recommendation. Scores around 240s.

Default New Best Friend

This thread will be my new best friend ahaha, count me in aswell guys!

Step 1: 245 1st Attempt
Step 2 CK: 250 1st Attempt
Step 2 CS: 1st Attempt

3 Months USCE

Canadian Citizen, IMG

Currently confused wether one should wait a week to be ECFMG certified and apply a week later or just apply on the 15th and be certified a week later.

So looking through all sorts of programs right now.

Anyone know how long it will take to be ECFMG certified if my Med School participates in the online system

Apply and be certified afterwards. For some programs your application will not be reviewed until they download the certification which happens the same day it becomes available. Other programs accept without ECFMG certification. But it should be there for the rank order list

You need to log in to your MyERAS page and go to the dashboard. On the top right corner, you'd see a link to ADTS (Applicant Document Tracking System), you'll be able to see if they've been uploaded to the ERAS Postoffice or not from there.

FYI, ADTS does not work with Google Chrome. Use Firefox or any other browser.

Ok guys I need help! I had an unwaived LoR from my home country so I uploaded it but later I realized it had a space in the file name that I did upload. I know it takes about 2 weeks for it to be available. It didn't tell me there is an error at that time I uploaded it. So do I refinalize the author and reupload it? How do I delete the previous one? And does it take two weeks to inform you of any error in the LoR and not tell you that at the time of upload? Because that's stupid. You get to know two weeks later that sorry the document your writer uploaded had an accidental mistake?

If you uploaded it yourself, then you can upload new versions of it inside the LORP. I dont know if it takes 2 weeks, probably not, since the initial uploading didnt take 2 weeks either (its UP TO 2 weeks). But the later you upload your LORs the more time it takes.

If you want to upload a whole new letter because you messed up in the name of the author or something like that, you just need need to create a new one and upload it. Just make sure you dont send that old letter to any of the programs. You cannot delete them as far as I know

Hello!

This might sound silly but what is the difference between ecfmg certification and credential verification?

Thanks!

You cannot be certified unless you are verified and to be certified you have to be done with your steps

So first verification- which is??? Next certification after competition of steps. I get that automatically, once I have step results.

I think credential verification is about your med school. Has nothing to do with ECFMG. Its just that they have to verify that you actually come from a med school, and one that is internationally recognized.

ECFMG certification is what you get after you complete the steps. They are two seperate processes. You can be done with the steps without having your credentials verified yet (if you were a med student for example).

Credential verification means ecfmg sends the document release request form you had signed in the start to your school and asks them to send ecfmg your verified degree and transcript. When medical school does it, ecfmg checks it and you are said to have your credentials verified that you can check on oasis. This verfication of credentials process starts as soon as you have submitted your first ever application (certificate of identification form) to ecfmg. However, you can still continue taking steps simultaneously. This process takes time depending on how fast your school responds to ecfmg and sends them documents. Once you're done with steps and your credentials have been verified too you are ecfmg certified otherwise ecfmg waits for your credentials to be verified from your school before they send you certificate even after you're the done with steps. E.g a student who doesn't have a degree yet.

Hello, If you have a Mac computer, just open the PDF, then press PRINT(Print as if you were planning to actually print the PDF) and choose the desire PAGE size (in this case A4, or letter size) then press the option save as a PDF.

Thats it, the new PDF file will be In 8.5*11

Default Late lor upload

I have questions regarding a late LOR upload.

I already have 3 LORs and will hopefully receive another in an observer-ship at a University hospital. Unfortunately the observer-ship doesn't start till September.

I wish to submit all documentations on September 15 but will not have the newest LOR ready until October. I plan on applying to selected programs with my ready 3 LORs and I am wondering would a submission of a late LOR change anything or would it just add on to the submitted application?

any information would be grateful thanks guys!

Most programs dont ask for more than 3 LORs. Some will ask for 4, like a chairman's letter and 3 additional letters. So I dont think it would make much difference, and your september observership will get that LOR too late I think.

Programs usually accept applications and send out interviews on a first come basis. So if you fail to apply by september because you were waiting for a letter, there is a chance that they have already filled all their interview spots,, and your late application wouldnt even be reviewed.

With 3 letters you can apply. And maybe you can add that 4th letter, it might help you for the interview season. You know, saying that you did another observership, and have another LOR. By then it should be uploaded already

I have a question though... my ADTS area of ERAS application says this under the title: Other supporting documents

File Type------------------First Available to Programs --------------Last Updated
ECFMG Status Report -------08/14/2014 02:41 pm---------------------08/14/2014 02:41 pm
Photo-----------------------08/18/2014 09:01 am---------------------08/18/2014 09:01 am

What does it mean by "ECFMG status report"? Does that mean they have received my verification documents or does it mean something else? and is it possible for me to see this so called status report and know what it is? Thanks for the help guys.

Hi I am also in similar situation. If the attending gives me LOR on 1st oct then how to update it to the programs I have already applied on 15th September??

I got an email from ECFMG that all documents should be uploaded by September 1st ideally.

Does this include LOR, MSPE, Transcripts? OR am I missing something? Thanks.

What do you guys think about applying to IMG-friendly lists that you can find online or asking your seniors for their lists? This will save us time and once we get an interview, we can read more about that particular program.

Guys,

I have two questions.
In MyERAS, when you click on ''Application'', then ''Training'', It says: write your internship. My last two years of education was called Internship in my country. Should I write about my last two years in this area or it is for American graduates only?

Also again in ''Application'' area, ''Education''. I had a straight forward 8 years medical school in my country and I did not have undergraduate step in my school. What about Graduation in this area? Is our medical school considered Graduation in this segment of MyERAS?

Firstly buddy please learn some forum manners.
There is a separate discussion going on here, you cant just pop in your unrelated query in the middle of it.
And please dont use Caps it seems like you're shouting at us!

As the person above said you must clear all exams just like anyone else no matter what contact you have.

Yeah man. Freaking J1 is out for me, cause cant get letter of needs from home country. So, I am stuck with H1b, which heavily limits my option. There are only around 120-130 programs that sponsor it.

Fingers crossed. Lets wait and see!

Well, the problem with this is that a list may not be valid in the subsequent seasons. Programs change their criteria. For some seniors, the list was tailored to their needs i.e 2nd attempt at CS or old grad or less step 1 score. Therefore, you have to really be sure that the same list will apply to your credentials and the current season.

Its a good idea though to find programs that are 'generally' and 'peer' considered to be IMG friendly. One way to judge that is to look at IMG% in those programs given in Freida. This gives you a vague idea. For example, BWH is 0.7 IMG. Actually, if you look at their stats, they had only 1 IMG in the last 4 years or so. Therefore, naturally its not IMG friendly.

Just a quick question. I have one LOR from the head professor of Cardiology from my University. I listed him as "Chairperson". He isn't the chairperson of medicine in the classical sense, but he is part of the committee for Medicine, and also Cardiology. Do you think programs back check and ensure the credentials of the professor?

It's better to write that designation which the letter writer will mention in your letter with the his signature.
