Default State Licensing laws

Quick question,

I know California and Illinois have a 4 week pysch requirement to be eligible to practice in that state. Do these 4 weeks have to be as a student? I have 2 weeks as a student and 2 as an Intern.

Are there other states with similar licensing laws? Or maybe different ones which might affect our eligibility?

Thanks!

This is what is says in the ERAS application page. Try to read all the information provided in the ERAS page. They give well explained pointers and complete resources in pdf form.

(Include Clinical and Teaching experience as work experiences, include all unpaid extra-curricular activities and committees you have served on as volunteer experiences )
This page allows entries for each work, volunteer, or research experience. Complete the required fields and Save. The page will refresh to allow additional entries.

An elective would count as a clinical experience.

Hello guys
I'm a new member here
I'm participating in match 2015

Here are my credentials
Step 1 : 243 Step 2 ck : 256 cs pass ... All first attempt
YOG 2014 .. IMG from Egypt
1 month elective at a university hospital
3 US LORS ( 2 from IM sub-speciality and one from research mentor CT surgery ) all waived
Co-author in a CT surgery paper that might be presented in the next CT society meeting
Need visa
plan to do the restructured Step 3 on November 2014
I'm applying to 70 Categorial IM programs ( will apply to IMG friendly programs only )

what are my chances in matching into a very good IMG friendly university or Uni/affiliated program ?
I plan to do fellowship training after residency

Thanks a lot

BS! You'll get lots of IV. Just make sure to empty your inbox regularly to make room for all the interviews pouring in.

I have a question .. Are there any specific documents we need in the time of APPLICATION to be sponsored by a visa ? I thought this was something we had to deal with if/when we match ?

Just Step 3 if you are looking for a h1b visa. But you can apply with pending results, and have it for the ROL

I'm in somewhat of a sticky situation. My med school unfortunately participates in ERAS-EMSWP so they will have to upload my transcript and MSPE. Unfortunately due to bureaucracy and other matters, my MSPE isn't ready yet, and both things will be uploaded together. I can only hope that iA both will be uploaded and available by September 15. However, in case they are not done by then, should I apply to programs on September 15 anyway or wait till both are uploaded? I guess I should mention that my credentials are verified, but I'm not yet ECFMG certified. I don't know if this will have any impact on the situation I'm stuck in. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Why are you not ecfmg certified yet if your credentials are already verified and you're done with step 1, 2 and cs? Also I think transcript is a vital component so. at least wait for that.

That will go under experience as work experience and it takes maximum of two weeks for LOR's to get uploaded to ERAS, may take a day to two weeks.

You don't need to upload certificate or put it anywhere in application. Ecfmg itself updates eras post office. In your myeras, click ADTS which is a tab on top of your application page. It shows you which of the documents you uploaded or ecfmg uploaded is available at eras post office. You can check if ecfmg has updated its documents or not by looking at the date it last updated.

Hi,

Once the MSPE and transcript have been uploaded and are available in ERAS, will they be available for programs to download automatically? Or will it take a few days or so? Any input would be appreciated

One more thing, does anybody know the fee for registering at NRMP? So we register on the 15th of September and apply to programs on the same day?
And I read on a post somewhere on this thread (or perhaps elsewhere in this forum), that the fee for uploading a photograph is $25. However, I could not find this on the ECFMG or ERAS pages. Any comment about this? Also, is it mandatory to upload a photo?

NRMP fees is I think $65. And we can apply to that and programs on the same day. Don't know about photo though.

Hello again people.

After sifting through most of the internal medicine programs I have seen some programs that offer a "primary care" program instead of a "categorical internal medicine". Their NRMP code is different as well.

All internal medicine programs have a code with a C in it. for example 3099140C0. While these "primary care" programs have an M, like 1491140M0. Preliminary programs have a P. So as you can see, these programs are obviously different, but they appear when searching internal med programs.

Anyone know what is the difference? Do these programs give an internal medicine certification? Or will I be certified as a primary care physician?

Hi guys
I'm a NON-US IMG and I want to apply this year for IM but unfortunately I won't get my CK result until September 28th because of the delay in reporting. Do you think I should send my application on 15th or wait for the result? How will this affect my application? Other parts of my application is complete

You can apply, but there will be some programs that want you to have your scores and the ECFMG certification ready the day you apply. Other programs will receive your application but not consider you until they are updated with your full application, that is with your CK score and ECFMG certification.

Thanks for fast reply
So do you mean I should apply for some of them based on their preferences?
For the programs that need the certificate, I should wait until getting the result?
For example Applying late is worse or applying incomplete ? Do they look at application again after getting my score?

No. Just apply, they will put your application on hold until they get your scores. They will know when it comes out, I think they get notified.

The only disadvantage is that your application will NOT BE CONSIDERED for an interview until its complete. So if the program receives 1000 applications and already filled their interview spots by september 25th for example, you application wont even be looked at, cause they have their spots filled. That is why everyone tries to apply as soon as possible. And most programs state that they check their applications in a "rolling basis". So first come first serve.

Anyone know what is the difference? Do these programs give an internal medicine certification? Or will I be certified as a primary care physician?

my MSPE and transcript were available to the programmes automatically.
plus theres no fees to upload a photo. in my opinion ts better to upload a photo too. its better to have a face with the application than with out it..

Why these LORs take so much time to upload? Its stressing cuz nrmp survey shows that program directors consider LORs upto 90% in their decision on taking candidates in their program.

I'm frantically checking ADTS. If the processing time is really 2 weeks, I won't have 3 LORs available by Sept 15th. I guess I'll apply anyway and hope for the best.

Even the photograph is taking longer than I expected to upload.

I have another question, I have 4 LORs from my different rotations in US, I received one of from my surgery preceptor and I have multiple LORs from my country specifically in Internal medicine from full professors, I know they have less value but I don't know it's better to use NON-US letters or a US based surgery letter?

I uploaded all of them to ERAS and fortunately they get processed in two days

This is a tough one. In theory you should not be sending LORs from surgery to an internal medicine program. It could look as though you regard internal medicine as your second choice. And program directors dont like that. Most PDs like their letters to be directed to their specialty. Unless your surgery LOR clearly states that you would do well in an internal medicine program too, or other specialties. Im not sure.

So you mean I shouldn't send my Non-US letters and save the spot ? Because possibly I could get another LOR for IM in mid-October, Is it not too late?

I was in the same situation.so I emailed eras support services and mention the name of the letter writer and the date letter was uploaded. They said they didn't receive it contact to your letter writer.
When I contacted him he uploaded the letter again after resizing it. In my case the letter size was greater than 8.5*11 in. And within 3 days it was uploaded to my application.
So before onyone upload the letter, make sure size should not be greater than 8.5*11and 500 mb.

60 $ for ranking of 20 programs. I am sure we will not need to rank more programs think about NRMP after september 15. Most smart people register only after getting an Interview. because whats the purpose of registering on NRMP if you don't have any interview and don't have any program to rank.

guys use this site:

http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/abou...ellowship.page

residency vacancies are posted on it. check daily.

Hey everyone. Just a quick question. I have mentioned all the externships/observerships that I did after I graduated. I haven't mentioned the clinical clerkships during medschool as work experience. Is it necessary to list all the clerskhips in the 3rd,4th,5th,and 6th year of medicine separately as work experience? I find that absurd(it will be like 5 pages!) but I have heard some people write those.

This, exactly! I found it hard to believe that they expected the photo size to be < 100 kB. Barely distinguish any prominent facial features.

I have the same question , I spent 18 months in internship rotation and I get paid for it ,So I have to write them at all ?! and if yes ,put it as a whole or every rotation separately ?
I have to mention that all of them mentioned in my medical school transcript ! so It's not particularly a "work experience"

Internships that we IMGs are a requirement to finish med school. Sometimes they pay, sometimes they not. It does not matter. Its part of your training. Its different from an elective which is optional. They are asking for those electives in particular. Becauae AMGs choose several electives. Sometimes many, sometimes a few.

I think you should mention your internship year anyway as a work experience. But not seperately

I am still waiting on two LORs from teaching hospitals to be uploaded and processed. These will be my strongest LORs so is it better to apply with them even though I might be applying later than Sept. 15th?

Interviews are given out on a rolling basis, so I don't want to send my application in too late, at the same time I don't want to be sending letters from a clinic observership instead of ones with a University letterhead.

Any advice?

Yes. It should appear on your ADTS and it should also appear when you select programs, with a checkbox to confirm that you wish to send it

Default Applying to University Programs with Research Opportunities

Dear *hopefully* future colleagues!

I am hoping to match into a university IM program, as I want to pursue academia/research as a future career. I probably won't apply to community programs because I have a strong desire to do research down the line.

Here are my credentials:
IMG from Singapore, native English speaker, need visa sponsorship
Year of graduation 2011
Have been involved in clinical medicine since graduation
ECFMG Certified
Step 1 262; Step 2 CK 264; Step 2 CS pass, all first attempt
Step 3 253, first attempt
7 publications in peer reviewed journals, 1 co-authored book chapter (4 of the 8 publications were done together with US faculty from an academic medical center)
3 accepted publications in peer reviewed journals; pending publication
Multiple presentations in European and American medical conferences
5 months of prior subinternship level USCE at academic medical centers with 10 US letters of recommendation from academic faculty

I am on a lean budget and will definitely apply to the top places (aim for the stars, so called). Unfortunately many of them have a 3 year cutoff for YOG or a 6 month to 1 year minimum for USCE. I will still be applying for these because who knows, they may bend the rules. I have about 50 "well known" programs, and another 40 or so "2nd tier" (but I'm sure equally as good) programs in mind at the moment.

From your experience how many of the "2nd tier" programs should I apply to, to be reasonably sure of getting, say, at least 10 interview invites?

Appreciate all your kind help!! My budget is unfortunately rather lean (but not crazy tight) so I want to streamline my application as much as possible, yet not cut it too thin.

Thanks so much!

Great credentials, hope you will match in top program.

If we applied in community hospitals , what are the chances that we could pursue fellowship opportunities ? especially in university based fellowship programs ? Of course if we met other criteria ....
I mean if we definitely want to pursue fellowship , should we only apply for university and affiliated-with-university programs ?

Hi
I'm new in this forum and I'm planning to participate in this year's match for IM residency
I have a question and I couldn't find any similar topic in the forum , so I had to ask it here . Unfortunately I failed in my CS exam in my first exam in SEP component and I passed the other parts and I couldn't find any earlier date than october , So I guess I have to apply with just my step 1 and 2CK scores and take my chances
My question is should I mention this failure in my personal statement and explain it ( for example I take my exam early and develop my English proficiency with Externships ) ? Or leave it and then if I get any interview I explain it ?

You should if you meet their criteria. But there are plenty of community programs that say most of their residents obtain their fellow positions. You need to look to each program individually.

Default Personal Statement

Should one mention the institutions he did his elective rotations in, USCE, in ones personal statement?

I mean you can either just say during this rotation at this institution or just say in USA.

Wondering if I should mention the Institutions or not... Any ideas guys?

Yes. But try to specify what was exactly. Research, observership etc

You should leave it and explain it in the interview. Besides there is no specific place in the application where you can put this. And btw I think your failed score will be sent to them. They will most likely know what you failed and if you are applying its becauae you either took it again already and are waiting on your score or you are going to take it

Default Personal statements - to "personalize" or not

So in ERAS you can create personalized PS to each program... Do you think it's worth the hassle creating a unique personal statement to each program?

For e.g., in the last sentence of the concluding paragraph I wrote, "I hope that your program will give my application positive consideration".

Should I create unique PSs to each program e.g. "I hope that the New York University Internal Medicine Residency Program will give my application positive consideration" for NYU, and "I hope that the Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine Residency Program will give my application positive consideration" etc.

I guess it's like addressing a letter as Dear Mr. So-and-so vs Dear Sir...

Any thoughts?

I don't think it's a good idea because all pd know that you're going to apply in other programs too so it looks really over the top to do such a thing

Hey guys, approximately how many programs are you applying to?

I'm almost done making my list from FREIDA/program websites, and so far I have around 105 programs for IM. That seems a little on the lower end. My scores aren't that great so maybe I should bump it up to 150+.

There is a technical hold on my photo, as emailed by ERAS representative. Should I be worried?

I think Externships/Observeships should go under Volunteery experience because we should get paid in any kind of work experience and in those kind of rotation we 're not getting paid!
Are you sure guys?

Hi guys.
Have anybody started to select the programs through myeras?

I started to select programs and found some confusing issues.

a. Is there any difference between categorical IM and categorical primary medicine programs? For example one of the IM residency programs chose via Freida (Greater Baltimore Medical Center) appears in Myeras as categorical primary medicine residency.
b. Is there any chance to do fellowship(for example endocrinology)in future after completion of primary care residency?
c.Some programs, for example St John's Episcopal Hospital, have two categorical to mark? Which one should I choose?

I will appreciate your inputs.

Thanks in advance

Already selected my list, 129 programs
YOGL 2012
Step 1: 253
Step 2: 268
CS: PASS 1st attempt
Step 3: 233
No USCE but 2 US LoRs (waived, from faculty members of Uni programs) and 2 from ABIM certified internists
What do you think if a program asks for 1-2 months USCE ? Is it strict ?
Like Lahey clinic, West Virginia Uni ?

Frankly, I am in the same situation. I spoke with one MD and he told me to go ahead and apply evem without the LOR's, so I guess its worth it instead of losing your spot as a potential candidate. The lists fill up quickly and if you send in too late, they might not even look at the app because they have filled up their interview spots. Also, I have heard that some programs don't start reviewing the apps right away on the 15th, but give it a few days to compile...so we may have a bit of a lee-way after all.

Good luck

Hey,

In MYERAS section when you fill out the experience, you have two options (written in bold letters at the top): to put it as work (clinical or reasearch experience) or volunteer (unpaid extracurricular activities and blah blah blah). I think that observerships and especially externships should go under work, since you were exposed to a clinical environment and hence suit best the definition of a clinical experience, which goes under "work"
