Hi guys,

Has anyone interviewed with UPMC Shadyside FM program? Could you please share your experience?
They only interview ~3 applicants a day, I think, and I was wondering if anyone who interviewed else where in a small group wouldn't mind sharing their experience. Thanks and best of luck to all of us!

Default Passion for FM

A few have sent me private messages so I thought I would share my thoughts on low scores. The way I see it, this game is all about networking. Whatever scores you have, you have to a least meet their minimum requirements on the websites. Everything else is shown interest. If you are genuinely interested in Family Medicine, it will show through your CV, the way you talk, the way you think. For example, my CV is geared to FM. All my LORS aren't generic but they specifically mention about my interest to pursue family medicine. I joined the AAFP and even attended the national conference. I listened to the lectures provided there about FM policies and reform. I got active and engaged in discussions about the future of FM. I attended the residency fairs and I shared my enthusiasm with residents, and PD's there. I kept in contact with a few of them that I connected with. I did 6 months of rotations in FM through medicalrotation.org and Americlerkships, and I met some incredible attendings in 3 major cities, each of them in a different time zone. The point to all of this is that if you are truly passionate about FM, you will exude that. People will only notice if you put yourself out there. And when they notice, thats when it becomes helpful during the interview process. Out of my 5iv's, 2 were through personal contacts, 2 were because of networking at the AAFP national conference, and 1 was because they liked something on my application. Once you get the interview, its about displaying that awesome personality. FM folks are different than the rest of the medicine community. We are weird, eccentric, talkative, we love to give hugs, and we love the field of family medicine. At the same time be professional and prepared. I don't know if this is the right way to go about getting residency, but it worked for me.

Keep grinding and Congrats to everyone that matched into this incredible field.

P.S. I'd rather keep the names of my IV programs confidential. Thanks.

I sincerely thankful for sharing your experience. I didn't match this year and I am feeling down. But now I can see how you worked hard for your passion, and you accomplished it. Big Congrats, again!
One question is that how did you register for AAFP? Last year, I called to the AAFP and one of the representatives said, I am not eligible to register, coz I am not a medical student nor resident.
Please share me something that how can I continue for that application as well? I greatly appreciate for your help and input and this forum too.

Default Matched into FM!

I put this information on another thread but since mine is more related to FM I wanted to put it here as well.

Here is my info:

YOG - 2013
Step 1-214
Step 2 CK-222
Step 2 CS- 1st
Citizen
Applied to 216 programs of IM and FM
All US rotations (Caribbean)
Got 5 IV all in FM

Congrats to everybody that matched! I know how hard it was, and for the people that didn't keep your head up! Use it as motivation for next year!

I actually need a little help from all of you.. i m trying to make a list of img friendly family med programs i can apply to in the coming cycle. and the programs that sponsor a visa, cause i need a visa. i know i will have to search every individual program and there is freida to get info from, but i really need a list to start from cause otherwise everything seems way overwhelming.. so if anyone can help me, i shall be very grateful.

thank you all.
Don't go like this. Believe me no one can give you the list that will help you. Even, it will harm you. Its not that someone will lie or give you a wrong list. My point is do your homework and put some real effort. You have lots of time, go to freida , go to the websites and compare your self with their criteria. You will have many benefits 1 , you will exactly get to know how competitive you are and what are the most important requirements for all programs 2, you will definitely save money 3, you will get some valuable info about the specialty by just roaming around these websites 4, look at the current residents, some programs fit your criteria but have never taken IMGs , you will not see a single IMG on their page. So my humble advice is to put some effort and this effort will definitely pay back

Default budget?

I was wondering if going to AAFP would help us in any way?

One thing I believe that is a really important component to an application when it comes to FM is the visa issue.

Even when you look at the NRMP PD survey, IM PDs consider 76% of Non-US IMGs for their positions where only 53% do for FM (amongst the lowest for ALL specialties.

There is a clear message here, its that if you need a VISA the difficulty that you will face in comparison to your USIMG counterparts will be much more significant compared to OTHER specialties. So do not be fooled as easily thinking that FM is the LESS competitive specialty if you are in need a of VISA.

I am saying this as someone who really wants to get into FM and this is a reality that I have to accept.

Default repeat FM applicant

IMG - visa needed
YOG 2013
Step 1 - 200 (2nd)
Step 2ck- 228
Step 2CS - Pass
Step 3 - taking in late sept
No research
USCE- 2 yrs carb grad
Observership with old attendings from clerkships: 1 months IM, 5 month Familyy Practice/walk in clinic
I LOR from IM attending, 3 LOR from FM, 1 ER LOR
applying for IM/FM residency

I am a repeat applicant, last year i applied only to FM. Do I have any chance for IM programs, I beleive FM i will have a better chance. Also, for the memberships if applying to FM should I include AAFP member even though I will also be applying for IM!

thank you

They only interview ~3 applicants a day, I think, and I was wondering if anyone who interviewed else where in a small group wouldn't mind sharing their experience. Thanks and best of luck to all of us!
Hi, I wanted to ask you how was your experience? Did you end up matching there?
