You maybe looking at good university programs. Most of them to wean out IMGS ask for usce of 6mo to a year. They arent IMGfriendly. Try the community hospitals . We are at a point where we cant pick and choose but I know we will for a fellowship. Good luck for the match

Hi guys, i am in my last year of family medicine residency in Europe and i wanted to apply this september for family medicine in the US , i have cleared my step 1 (213) first attempt, CS ( passed) first attempt, and i am yet to give CK, probably before July 28th .
The problem is i have been looking at he requirements for family medicine and they ask things that i donīt have : USCE, they donīt sponsor visa, LORS from US physician. I was hoping to apply to at least 100 FM programs, but i am afraid i wonīt be able to do that since i donīt fulfill the minimum requirement for 90 % of the programs, what do you think i should do ?? any positive advice ???
Thanks for your reply.

Same here, YOG 2009 ( minus the obligatory one year of internship) . No USCE on FM , all IM , that too in clinics. One in medical university. I want to apply to FM anyway. Do you think I have a chance in FM?

Smile

Step 1 - 220
Step 2 - 210
Step 2 CS - pass
All first attempts
YOG - 2011
IMG, need visa
1 month observership at hospital in IM
2 months observership at community setting practice in FM
1 IM LOR, 2 FM LORs. All from US.
Applying to FM.

I know my Step 2 score will hurt my chances, but I am still hopeful. Do you guys know how important is PS for FM residency? I heard they only read it after selecting candidates based on USMLE scores.

Good luck to all. Let's keep this thread alive.

Default 2015 IMG family medicine list

I am applying in FM and IM too. The research I have done has so far shown that the distinction of FM program of IMG vs AMG friendly is much less clear as compared to IM program. Secondly there are so many Caribbean graduates in FM programs.
I found these lists online. Let me know what do you guys think about those

Does anyone want to talk through which programs they are applying to? I've pretty much finalized my list but it would be nice to compare notes with someone to make sure we haven't missed anything. Just add me on skype if you are interested...starnh71.

Guys,

I heard American Graduates are more interested in FM residency in these days and program directors are more interested in AMG instead of IMG. That's why trend of IMG acceptance rate in going down in recent years for FM.
Does anybody know anything? Is that true?

As long as the LOR is speaking generally about your performance and not directed specifically towards surgery, it shouldn't raise a red flag. Use it as a last resort.

Yeh thats fine as long as it doesn't mention specifically say you'll be a good candidate for psych or surgery (or any other speciality name apart from the one you're applying to)... It should be okay.

Default LORS

Hey guys so I got 2 LORS uploaded from FM attendings and another is being loaded up next week.
Got a question, i'm having a hard time uploading LOR form a certain hospital. Can I get a letter uploaded from one hospital letter head in another hospital. SO lets say I got a letter from X attending at X hospital but Y hopsital say that they can upload the letter for me. Will that be a problem on ERAS aplicatino when the programs download my LORS.

@docgyneco

If ECFMG has already sent out your certificate, it will automatically update on the system. You dont need to write it anywhere on ERAS. If you check ADTS, it will show up as ECFMG status report (which will say you are certified).

Its never too late. But 15th is approaching. So, you might wanna rush things up a little bit. And if you have already written your PS, it gets uploaded right away, unlike LORs.

You have great step scores however for family medicine you need USCE of at least 6 months. I would say more then 3/4 of programs have a 5 year graduation cut off time some have 3 years and a few have, 10 years. I made my list and lideraly went through every program that sponser visa.

Hi guys.

Although I will apply to IM and Ob/Gyn programs, but I am silent reader of this thread, because my wife is preparing her application for FM.
I have one question regarding FM programs. During her program selection, my wife noticed some "FM rural programs".
Can anyone please explain what is rural program? And is there any difference between rural and regular programs?

Thanks in advance.

Rural programs mean that they are located at a rural region and most of the experience is at an outpatient setting. It prepares you for being an independent primary care provider. However, in the long run, you can practice wherever and howsoever you want. You are eventually gonna get board certified in FM anyway. I hope this helps

Thank you psoasmajor for your input.
So one can do 3 years in rural FM residency and after graduation he or she is free to go, i.e. can choose any other place to work? Or there is a type of contract stating that you should work in rural place for some period of time?
Could you please tell me cons and pros of applying to rural FM programs?

Are you going to apply to these programs?

Sorry for so many questions.
Thanks

Yes, One can work anywhere after completion of residency. No, there is no such contract.
Pros - Lots of clinical exposure. Most are unopposed programs.
Cons - Nearest Walmart may be 15-20 miles away, probably no public transport.
I love working in rural areas. So yes, I am definitely going to apply to these programs.
And its not a problem. We are here to help each other!

Hi,
Today I got my step 1 (final exam), which is only 204, I did very well in the exam, better than CK, I prepared it well, I though I would get at least 235+, I'm so frustrated, so sad, I cried a lot, I think I lost everything.
Step 2 CK : 235
CS: Pass 1st time.
YOG: 2011
US citizen
I have strong 4 US-LoRs from Internal Medicine, 3 months USCE, 10 month non-USCE.

I know recheck is almost worth nothing, but I went for it.
I was fully prepared to apply for IM this match, now everything is changed, I will switch to Family medicine.

I'm applying this match.
What are my chances to get matched in FM?
Please sincere advice.

Thanks.

I know getting a low score is not the greatest feeling however, family medicine should not be considered a backup specialty. Apply broadly for IM, dude your American so you will get allot more ivs, but in regards to FM looks like your application is not geared towards FM and you need at least 6 month USCE plus for sure fm lor to even be considered based on past posts and current friends of mine. good luck

What is considered as USCE?

My knowledge is as an IMG we can not touch patients.

When you do the "observership" can you put it on the ERAS resume when compiling the experiences?

Thank you for any information you can share

Default Good Luck

I just wanted to say good luck to everyone entering the match this year. My husband matched last year in family medicine and this forum really helped me deal with all the anxiety associated with the process. I will be thinking about everyone and praying for matches in the right program.

I also wanted to give you some encouragement that even with a step failure you can match. My husband, who is a US IMG, failed step 2 and at the time we were devastated. He passed it on the second try. We bought into the idea that his career as a doctor was over before it even started. We applied to the 2013 match and didn't match. We applied again last year thinking he wouldn't match and expecting it be our last year applying. We spent the whole match season in knots and so upset. How were going to pay off his loans? What job could he get? You know typical questions you ask yourself in this situation. I realize now it was so much time wasted being anxious. Anyway by the grace of God he matched into his first choice program. He is so happy in his residency program and that step failure is just a bad memory now. Was it harder to match with the failure? Yes. Was it impossible? No. I believe my husband's lor's, interview skills, and grades helped him to overcome his Step failure. I write this so that you will not feel discouraged like we did by all the negative talk on the internet that tells you matching is impossible if you are an IMG, if you have poor score or a fail, and the list goes on.

If you have any questions about what my husband did to improve his chances, programs that we found to be IMG friendly and open to candidates with failures or lower scores, or just general questions about the process I'd be glad or answer your questions.

Good luck to all and God bless.

Default Thanks!

That's the kind of words people should write on this forum, but instead they spend their time telling us how impossible things are, i am happy for your husband. Hard work always pays off.
Best wishes and thanks for the encouragement.

Thanks.

Actually, when I first told my mom how many programs I was applying to, she got really stressed about the possibility they would all invite me for interview. I had to reassure my mom that even if that happened, it would be the best possible problem ever.

my FM preceptor told me that for IMGs IM is better option.. FM is seriously for USMG .. as it is a very easy going field and they likely to get Matched in it..
and it is very competitive as well b/c you'll be competing with USMGs.
another prob with FM is less spots available comparing with IMGs.. most IM programs start with 12 positions while FM starts with 4, 6 or max 8.
so you have alot better chance in IM..
wish you all the best..
do not be sad.. may god be with you

Default Supplemental online application

Got an email from Univ of Minnesota FM program to fill out their online supplemental application. From what I have heard, its a generic email they send out to everyone who applied there. Anyhow, after 3 days of staring at a silent inbox, even generic emails are a sigh of relief

Hey guys. I'm a U.S. citizen and I went to a Caribbean school. I haven't yet graduated and I applied on September 16th. I got a phone call today from a program that I applied to in Pennsylvania and they informed me that they wanted to interview me late in October or early November. I passed all of my USMLE exams on the first attempt. My scores are as follows:

Step 1: 230
Step 2 CK: 240
Step 2 CS: pass

I'm guessing it was Minnesota. And yeah, I got that one too Alhamdulilah. Even after I sent it, they sent me another one. But I didn't want to fill it out a second time, because I didn't save the things I wrote the first time.

Which one?
There are around 5-6 FM programs from U of Minnesota.

University of Minnesota sent a supplemental application and asks you to choose which one you want, or if you want all of them.

In ERAS, I only applied for one University of Minnesota FM program, but I got nothing so far.

I think I just applied for all of them. That was my principal: when in doubt, just apply.

Some people got their supplementals yesterday, but I didn't get mine till today. So, I don't think they send them all out in one batch. Tomorrow's another day, friend.

I had my app sent in to two UNM programs, Fairview and North Memorial. It took me 30 minutes as well. I just copy pasted things from my CV.
