Default Observership in October-Useful?

Brief intro before my question. IMG, GC, Step1 and CS pass, step 2 yet to write, no USCE. I have an observership for the month of September(IM) and October( Peds). I want to apply to pediatric residency. But do you think doing an observership in OCT will help me this year? I dont think i can update my CV once i submit it to progs in september, so will it be useful? it is at a 1000$ fee!

Thank you!

Default observership

observership are hard to get!! they will definitely help you.. you can e-mail /call programs to let them know you are doing observership at hospitals even if you cannot put it in your application..
hope this helps

Another option is you can mention it in ERAS even though you'll be doing it in the future (I read it somewhere)! I'm not a 100% sure about the appropriateness of this, but I guess it shouldn't hurt. (More opinions needed).

It most definitely will be useful.

I matched last year. I was in a similar position. You can see my scores and visa status below. Being within a residency program during interview season helps. You get to meet Program coordinators personally. If you play your cards right, you can get an interview from that program itself by impressing your preceptors. They get about 500 applications per seat of theirs, so they always prefer someone they know.

In addition to the above. Once you have completed your observership or just are about too. Start calling every single program you applied too. They hate having to answer regarding application updates. But what I did was play a little dumb by saying "Hey ! I am really interested in your program, I have gone through your website and I meet all your criteria. I just completed another USCE that I was fortunate to get and have acquired a great LOR which I wanted to be part of my application. How do you suggest I send that over ?"

I knew that ERAS allowed 4 and I had already uploaded 4. But saying the above not only shows interest in their program but it gives you a genuine reason to call them up Vs "Hey can I have an update on my application".

Just my 2 cents. All the best to all who apply

Hey. By contacting programs you mean contacting program coordinators right?! Is there any use of mailing the program directors? Eg. When a article submitted before gets accepted etc.?

Yup. The PC's

I tries mailing the PD's when I got a fresh publication. Even tried connecting with them via LinkedIn. Didn't get anything out of it. Doesn't mean it might not work for you. But that's been my experience.

Ah. I think PCs are your best bet then. Thanks for sharing your experience.
