I spoke with the coordinator directly over the phone to confirm my date because I was on the floors and couldn't get to a computer (God help the world if I get waitlisted somewhere again). She sent me the confirmation within the next day or two.

hey guys. I have a one question. According to Advocate Masonic program's homepage, it dosen't sponsor J1 visa anymore. so although ECFMG sponsors our J1 visa, they are not gonna accept this? No one in Visa needed group has gotten IV from masonic program..

Your best bet is calling up the coordinator and asking her brother, wish I could help answer your q.

Thanks!! As per my understanding YOG shouldn't matter much for Anesthesiology as much as it does for IM.

Hello, friends! Please, can anybody explain the meaning of prelim programs? What do prelim programs exist for? If you guys want to be anesthesiologists, how can prelim help you with that?
Please, if you can, by your own words. I'm so tired of links.

Let me answer that for you. I had same questions before start of the season. In anesthesiology you can match into 2 kinds of programs.
Categorical (4yrs) or Advance (3yrs). If you match at categorical you get to do the internship year with the same institution along with 3 yrs of anesthesiology.

If you match in Advanced you need to find 1 yrs internship/prelim in IM,surgery or trans.

Hence its almost mandatory for IMG to apply to Categorical, advanced and Prelim programs

Hope that helps

What do you mean by "find 1 yrs internship.."? Doesn't it need match process?
If you didn't get any Prelim IV, but matched in Advanced? What are the next steps?

That is correct. You need to match to a prelim program. It is mandatory to get into a Prelim before you can start your advanced

So we have a number of scenarios:
1. We matched in Categorical Anest program and we are happy.
2. We matched in Prelim program and on September will participate in Match process again, but being a little bit more competitive.
3. We matched in Advanced Anest program and Prelim simultaneously. Is it possible to do in the same Match season?
4. We matched in Advanced Anest program only. Outside is month of March. What to do next? I've heard about possible fellowship to fill the gap.

Unfortunately, predominantly soft rejections aka you will never hear from them again. Really hoping for another wave of IVs though, heard nothing at all this week.

Hey Anesth- think we talked about this a bit ago, so the interviews for prelim should be there if you check back in the thread. But just to recap, I got interviews from Brookdale (today), Jersey Shore, Basset Hospital, Newark Beth Israel, Lincoln prelim and transitional, Richmond U (Staten Island), and Elmhurst. Hope that helps!

I remember from last year that this is the point when rejections start raining down. If we don't brush them off then we're in for a month of torture.

I think I read in one of your posts you had mentioned that you were currently in a preliminary position.

Are your interviews for advanced positions?

yes, i'm currently a PGY-1 prelim in Internal Medicine. Im interviewing for categorical and reserved ("R") positions, not advanced. A "reserved/physician only" position is a 2015 PGY-2 position (advanced is for 2016)

Thanks.

How has your experience been with the reserved positions? I might be doing the same next year if I don't match this year and end up getting a prelim position.

ive gotten a number of interviews. i cant complain. In all honesty, i think a good way for a non-caribbean US IMG to get into anesthesiology is to do a preliminary year first. I only had 2 anesthesia interviews last year...and now I have 7 so far.

Haha I haven't gotten any invites since October! I would be pretty happy with one right about now. Rejections from Maimonides and NYMC at Westchester. No love from NY at all! Feeling is mutual NY!

I got the same rejections along with BWH,NYU and UIC.
But quite strangely a IV from SUNY downstate on Saturday evening. I think last 10% IV might be remaining. Try an be positive.

Do you know what happens if AMGs decide not to show up on interviews? Did any of you try appealing a rejection?

Same here.
I've heard from a few programs that I am on the waitlist.
Hope it is not just a courtesy and hope it will really work out.
Best luck for everyone!

IVs from cook county and boston med center! Its still coming!

I've been Lincoln in bronx last Tuesday, it was just a program introduction by PD and Chief residents and hospital tour. It took 2 hours only and as they mentioned they do not check who comes or not to the 'open house session' and it doesn't affect thier rank.. Its so weird but it is how it is;;;
Good luck for your ivs guys

IV Tufts anesthesia advanced, would there be any point in applying to another 10-20 prelim/trans programs this late?

I'm worried about this as well. I have like 3 prelim invites and I added a few surgical prelims just to be safe, but I haven't heard anything.

Congrats on Tufts, I was there last month and I really liked the program. I wish they were categorical though.

Are you applying this year? It's kind of.... late if you're not understanding those terms. Either way here are the definitions...

Categorical: 4 years including PGY1 (Intern yr), CA1 (Clinicial Anesth Yr 1), Ca2, and Ca3. Starts roughly on July 2015

Advanced: Ca1, Ca2, Ca3 years only. Starts July 2016. You need apply for the internship yr (Preliminary in either Surgery or Internal Medicine, or Transitional Yr.) Remember to ask the program if you can do 1 month of Emergency Medicine (as one of your elective) and 2 months of ICU. (Part of the ACGME requirement before starting anesth.) Some anesth programs suggest you to also do an elective month in Anesth towards the end of your Intern/PGY1 year.
Note: If you get matched into Advanced positions, but received absolutely no invites for the prelim positions, you have to scramble for a prelim spot or else you lose everything.

Preliminary: aka Internship (PGY1yr) in Surgery, Medicine, or Transitional Yr (TY)

I hope this answers your question.

* Congrat Valeh on your Tufts IV. I guess iv's are still being sent out. Slight hope =)

I think people are getting interview fatigue and they're cancelling interviews. I overheard at least 2-3 AMGs talking about cancelling January interviews as they were "tired of interviewing."

I know right? I was pretty shocked to hear this said by multiple people. I also heard a few people discussing just cancelling a few interviews over Christmas time since said institution they had been invited to wasn't that great of a place so they'd rather enjoy their holiday.

Must be nice.

I'm still wait listed on a few places, but one place that wait listed me closed their interview season after telling me they were "thinking about my application." That was fun!

Default Help in ranking

Hello everyone ,
I have some queries reg ranking , may be they are silly but I am not clear on few things

If I rank categorical in one program and advanced in the same program then it shows as rank 1 and rank 2 respectively , does it change our preference if the fourth program in our list will be number 7 in the primary ROL ??

Can we rank supplemental list for prelim even though it's not linked to the program ..? I mean I have georgia advanced and Lincoln transitional even though they are not linked .

Thank you

why should you rank a program you did not interview at?
will it hurt the ones you interviewed at?...NO

the way i see it, you are just creating extra work for nrmp. there's obviously no way you can match in a program that did not even invite you for an interview
