so how many interviews did you guys end up with?

I ended with 9 Anesthesiology and 3 prelims. Got no love for prelims.

I'm pretty sure I bumped into RAmd at UAMS.

the way i see it, you are just creating extra work for nrmp. there's obviously no way you can match in a program that did not even invite you for an interview
The very small tiny off chance they ranked someone on the waiting list?
Didnt end up ranking them anyway.
8 days left.

You guys want to see if an admin will anonymously post ROL like they're doing on sdn. Might be kinda of fun. I could always do it also if you guys don't care.

In Anesthesiology forums on sdn they're posting their ROL anonymously through an admin. Only 36 posts, but it's interesting to see how people end up ranking programs.

Not unless someone posts it and I don't think someone will. Someone posted on student doctor that it's against NRMP rules to post the list of programs participating in SOAP. I don't know if that's true or not.

A friend of a friend matched advanced but not prelim, although he said it won't show him what anesthesia programs are in SOAP since he matched advanced.

If I matched at my #1 or #2 I'm going to be sooooooo happy !

Default repeat applicant--matched.

congratulations to all that matched. I didn't match to anesthesia last year--almost decided to give up. 2 years of chasing this dream after med school and a brutal year in internal medicine.

so thankful.

Hi, I have a question: How do the R programs work? What is the difference between R and A? When can you apply to either?

"R" programs begin at a 2nd year level for the upcoming year (2015). you need to have completed or be in the process if completing a PGY-1 year to match here.

"A" programs begin in 2016...so you'll need to match into a preliminary PGY-1 in the same match. If you have already completed or are completing a PGY-1 year, you wont be doing anything for 2015...you wait for 2016, but i really doubt programs will even rank someone in "A" if they are in this situation.

Thanks, I am going to apply this year for the first time, but I think doing a prelim year first give you better possibilities for the next year. I f I do a prelim, the next season I can apply to a R program, can I also apply to a C program? Also which prelim programs qualify as basic year for an A or R program? I've heard not all programs are accepted by anesth A or C programs.

I really appreciate your help. Thanks

you'll be safe with preliminary IM, as long as after youve already matched, you request 2 ICU rotations and 1 ER rotation (anesthesiology programs require this). and yes, you can apply to C. I had 3 C interviews this year which i placed at the bottom of the list.

Also, if an IM prelim program asks how many anesthesiology interviews you got, tell them 12 (theres no way they can ever find out). haha. I think they're more likely to rank you if they feel you will match to PGY-2

Totally agree. I would just say, "I've got more than enough to match," I just need a prelim spot. Actually at a Prelim I interviewed at, a girl had just found out she matched Optho (like day after Optho match). I'm sure they ranked her high.

Hey guys,

congratulations

can you please give me some advice

I am an IMG with scores step 1 - 219 step 2 ck 244 all first attempt, will be taking cs this July. 3 great LOR's from Covenant healthcare, 1 from head of anesthesia department. currently EM resident PGY 1 in my home country, chose EM program because it's based on Emory University EM department residency curriculum and was recently registered with the effort of one professor from Emory. (EM residencies have just started to emerge in many countries of Europe, and anesthesia program is really weak here) + it gives me a good chance to secure observership in Grady hospital Atlanta.

I have always wanted to continue my training in anesthesia, the field I totally love, but I'm so disappointed and demotivated because of my low step 1 score.

the other field I'm considering now is EM.

should I still go for anesthesia or double apply?

many thanks

EM isn't a backup plan for anything, it's more competitive than anesthesia. In fact you need EM specific LOR which come on a specific form.

I think you should look at people's scores from this year, and see how many interviews they got to give you an idea on how competitive you are. You can also look at NRMP charting outcomes from 2014, but everything changes yearly. It will only give you a ball park idea.

For us, even with good scores we are capping out at 7-9 interviews. US grads with similar scores of >230 were getting double that. There were people successful with similar step 1 scores matching, but it's going to be very, very difficult.

Prepare to apply to every single Anesthesiology program you can afford to. I would advise the same with EM if you want to do EM or anesthesiology.

To be brutally honest, your step 1 kind of sunk you for Anesthesia & EM. As IMG, we have to have higher scores than equivalent US applicants, but it's not completely hopeless.

Anesthesia boards are still tough enough that they want a "high enough" step score that you're going to pass written and tougher oral. It's like radiology, radiology is a lot less competitive nowadays, but from what I've heard their boards are pretty tough. Therefore, regardless of it being less competitive, the bar stays high since boards are tough.

You're going to get filtered out automatically from many EM and Anesthesia programs based on your step 1 alone. Between now and interview session, there isn't much you can do to make yourself more competitive, other than trying to work connections.

You can try to cold call places, but this can back fire. Best is if you have existing connections to have them introduce you.

Research, if you find a postdoc, you're going to have to give them at least 1-2years and that doesn't mean you're going to publish.

My recommendation would be to write killer PS, hope your LOR are killer (ask your letter writers if they have any connections you can use), try to do some observerships or externships in Anesthesia. Anesthesia world is smaller than you would imagine.

Make sure your application is ready Sept 15th, send it out to every single anesthesia program you can afford. If you can get a PTAL letter for California, you're in great shape. Although California is competitive due to location, there are a few weaker programs in California that are lower hanging fruit to pick off.

All it takes is ONE interview to match, and there's more than a few people that only had one interview or only a handful and matched.

Lastly, attend the ASA in San Diego. The opening day of the ASA there is a meet and greet of programs. Try to mingle with programs you at least have a chance of matching at (IE don't waste time talking to places that don't take IMGs like Duke or Wake Forest). Be ready with a copy of your ERAS application and or official CV printed on nice paper. Recognize this is a mini real interview (wear a suite, be polished with your story) and rock it. I definitely picked up at least 3-4 interviews from this meet and greet including the actual program I matched at.

If you can afford to attend the ASA for the full time and you really want to be a stalker, track down PDs giving lectures. The ASA will give you a booklet with names of people giving lectures/where. You can also track people down using the online search tool, but I used the booklet than googled people using my phone. You don't necessarily have to attend the lectures, since some give workshops that cost a lot. I just made sure to show up at the end of the workshop and snag the PD while they were leaving.

Yes I know, very stalkerish, but I tracked down a lot more that I didn't have the chance to talk to during the meet and greet. I picked up a few more "soft invites" read waitlist from this, but I also managed to pick up one interview at a place that's considered a top 10 anesthesia program on the west coast by doing this. Although I didn't match there, being granted an interview at least gives you an option to match there. That's your goal, getting as many interviews so you match.

So you can draw your own conclusions. I know I'm pretty intense, so maybe you shouldn't employ this tactic as it might rub a few people the wrong way. My thinking was I was going to do everything in my power to match to a program, so what did I have to lose.

Maybe a few others could give you a few tips I missed.

GL on your path!

I cannot thank you enough, I'm so glad you wrote this. Thank you.

So this idea seems really interesting but the ASA conference is late October, wouldn't most of the interviews have been sent by then?
