Default Surgery 2015

Hi, I am applying for surgery this year and going in with 227(1)/229(1)/CS(1)/2009/USCE-8M in a UNIV hospital/2 publications + 6 accepted abstracts in an intl meeting and ongoing research.
(step 3 coming soon!)
What are my chances for 2015 match for prelim or categorical surgery?..ANYONE?

Hey the thread is not as active as i want it to be. . Your application is good prelim is a good shot. Categorial directly is very tough.

Going for General surgery, probably going to apply for up to 40 programs.

Only choosing categorical - life is all about chances no?
- kinda see weird for me to tick both prelim and cat on the same program, wont i be directly considered as prelim?

257/251/Pass(1st)
6 weeks of USCE (4 weeks at Mayo) - 3LOR's from Mayo.
Fresh European grad.

VISA needed

Good luck for the match. I would recommend applying for prelim as well. Just as a back up

Default Preliminary Surgical Residency

What are the pros and cons? Most importantly is it paid or unpaid?

I'm in too.

No interview invites for surgery yet. Got a few in my backup specialties.

235/249/pass all 1st attempt.
july 2009 graduation, European medical school.
4 LORs, 1 from home, 3 from US surgeons.

Crossing fingers and dying a little each time I check my emails (that is, every 15 minutes or so).

Default prelim generl surg

Hi guys,

im going to apply in a year from now and would like your advice. I love ortho, but I am not the ideal applicant (IMG, step 1). Anyway my question is, would you guys apply to ortho, general surg cat and general surg prelim or would you add something else to that list?

Dear Surgery programs,

Why don't you love me as much as I love you?

11 interviews in IM, not even one in Surgery. Guess I will have to learn how to read an EKG soon.

Hope it's going better for you guys.

What are my chances for 2015 match for prelim or categorical surgery?..ANYONE?
When you receive your offer for Surgery residency, an excellent surgery residency personal statement is required which will serve to show your character and clearly explain why you desire to go into this particular field...

Orthopedics is a field that many wish to follow and us such is a highly competitive area in which to gain a residency, many prospective residents becoming disappointed every year. Being accepted by a ACGME (Accreditation council for Graduate Medical Education) residency will require a orthopedic residency personal statement that has been written to perfection.

Hey if you are an img categorial if very difficult. If you want surgery apply to prelim positions. And apply to a lot of programs . Good luck

Default Prelim??

Guys, I'm wondering how difficult it is to get a prelim position in GenSurg. My understanding is that many hundred prelim positions go unfilled each year (looking at NRMP data).

Doesn't that mean that prelim is waaaay less competitive (than categorical) and that there are generally more positions than applicants???

not entirely true. programs dont have to fill all positions. so even if a program has many applicants, if they dont have enough people they "like" these positions will just go unfilled. so no need to go bazinga on prelim positions now.

No, i have applied only to categorical i dont know the program and i only heard it's a good hospital so i tried my luck with categorical, i am only aiming for categorical in New york city practically so hospitals around Boston are further away from my aim.

Best of wishes to you all! What are important things for getting into Surgery? It's a really competitive field. I personally am not pursuing it, but I sure know people who like Specialties in the Surgical field. Any imput would be really appreciated and helpful.

If the IV invitation didn't specify categorical or prelim, will the IV be for both positions? Thanks

Good luck on the 2 IVs. You should apply to prelim aswell. You would probably have more Ivs. Surgery is very competitive for Imgs. Most match into cat after a yr of prelim

Still waiting to hear back from 55+ programs. Should I take it that most are a silent rejection by now?

It's complicated. Its paid. Nobody knows what happens afterwards. We have tit bits info from here and there. That said most residents make it to a program. Either by switching specialties or outperforming their categorial residents

Hi everyone
First of all good luck for the interviews and match.
I am a medical student aspiring to get a generl surgery residency in future, I just have one question, the usce you guys have mentioned in your credentionals, is it purely hands-on experience in the deprtment of surgery/its subspecialities? Because i have been hearing a lot about how observerships are now useless while pplying for residency. And if usce in other departments counts, what other specialities should i focus on because i am currently in the process of applying for clinical electives.
Any info regarding this will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

The usce I put on my application was from hands-on only experiences in general surgery (but anything within the surgical field helps). I also had LORS (from surgeons) from these experiences to back them up. I applied the year before with no usce (I have good scores (250+ on all steps, first attempt) and listed a few observerships (non-US) I did and I didn't receive one interview.
