Hello, could you please update how many prelim interviews did you get?

Hi Frinaz. Capitan-jack has created a thread in regard to prelims: 2015 Internal Medicine Preliminary Year Residency Applicants.

I personally applied to around 100 prelims, because I was really interested to go to a specific Advanced Neuro program. So far, only 1 interview. Same goes to many other friends. Prelims are really tricky to obtain, cuz they are mostly reserved for those admitted to advanced programs at the same or affiliated hospitals.

I now think that applying to prelims broadly is probably not a good idea. I think its better to have some IM letters and apply to categorical IM instead, and keep applications to prelims more specific.

Default Is it getting harder?

Do you guys feel that Neurology is no longer one of the less competitive specialties that include IM and PEDs? Going over the IM thread, you can see that invites are more common per person as I see it even with lower scores. Do most of you have IM as backup? Or are you focused on neurology only as the charting outcomes cited a higher match rate with IMGs who apply broadly to one specialty only. I am going to enter the match next year and wonder if neurology would be a good focus point or I should also aim for IM and consider a double board later on? Thanks! And good luck to all of you, I hope you will get what you want which will also encourage the rest of us.

All specialties get more difficult each year as the AMGs grow. In my humble opinion, its a very good idea to apply to 2 programs. It simply increases your odds for match. However, you should really work harder to obtain more LORs, write 2 SOPs, and probably one more USCE. Do it if you have time and it doesnt affect your Max preparation for your other specialty. I had 4 Neuro-specific LORs and randomly applied to 40 categorical IM and got 3 IM IV so far. If I go back, I would get 1 IM LOR and apply to more categorical IM (Instead of wasting money for IM prelim).

The point is many good neurology programs are advanced programs. There are afew advanced programs with guaranteed IM-prelim.However, the rest of them have some IM prelim spots in their IM department they keep them for AMGs.
Here is the problem they give their IM-prelim spots to the AMGs.If they rank any IMG they will know, that applicant should do prelim in another place. On the other hand they are worried to loose their neuro spot if that person can not find prelim.Because of this reason they prefer not to rank even outstanding IMGs and risk their spot.
It seems that our eventual destiny as an IMG will be neuro categorical!! I know a person who applied in 80 neuro categorical and already got 14 interviews he was a strong candidate though!
Regarding applying to IM then neurology!! They are passing a law that people who finished one residency can not do another one! so I beleive if you are applying to any specialty pick the field that you wanna spend rest of your life!
Good Luck

Hi Amortat,
Do you have any idea how many prelim interviews put us in safe zone of matching?

There is no safe zone here as I see! Apply to as many prelims as you afford if you just wanna go to Neuro. If you are fine to be an internist in future, then it is more efficient to apply to more categorical IM rather than all Prelims. Also there are many top universities with categorical neuro or linked (guaranteed) prelims. Keep track of our 2015 cohort as we are waiting for more luck within next few weeks! Also would be nice if you could tell us if your friend with 14 IVs got invites from top tier universities and her credentials.

Hello Guys.

I think we should have an insight into where to apply for prelim. Simply because there are too many and as you said, prelim spots in universities that get applicants in other specialties is not a good option since they are implicitly reserved for those residencies.

I personally have applied to 50 prelims and got 3, all from small community hospitals or universities with admissions in 0 or 1 specialties. I am not very worried about prelim, cause there are 8-13 prelim spots in each program, and out of my IVs so far only Northwestern is advanced and does not guarantee a prelim year.

I always think rejection from a program shows they are in their early stages of screening and we have hope for more IVs.

@Circle: hope you get more IVs from better places.

Hi bobbyto,

We are all waiting for IVs.

By the way, what is your credential, if you do not mind.

I agree.
Unless people cancel their IV, there is little chance of getting any new IV.

Well...I won't count this (not getting a rejection from Mayo yet) a victory.

I got rejection from Jackson Memorial Hospital as well. they specified that they have 5 years from graduation cut off. I believe they have just applied graduation year filter or filter for IMG's :-) because otherwise your credentials perfect. :-)

Henry Ford / Wayne state University rejection too.
Too many applicants gave them power to reject anyone, if they desire!! They are the judge and jury.

I have heard there are over 2500 neurology candidates this year for around 310 slots, as compared to last year's around 900 candidates.
What's going on???
Is there any possibility of more interviews????

UTMB Galveston, although I think that was probably because of a contact there...
Hope the 'last wave' of reviews and invites starts soon...

Hi,
Where did you get your IV. I will put that in the list, if you do not mind.

By the way, 3 IV is good so far for match. Focus on IV.

I also have received just 3 IVs. Do you guys think that we should get more IVs soon or that is it? When would it start this November wave of interviews? Does anyone know when did it start last year. We probably should add 2 weeks to the dates of last year because the application started 16 days later.

Got the rejections from Arkansas and Vanderbilt in October. I am just wondering who these people keep for the backup, in case of cancellation of any interviews ? Just got one interview, quite stressful. I am thinking what to do next for the 2016 match
