Certificate US LoRs versus home country LORs!

hi!

I am really confused.

I was told and i read in most places that US lors are more valuable than your home lors. But recently some people said that letters from your professors back in college are absolutely required. Is that true?

If I manage say 3 LoRs from US do I need any from home?
Will I not be able to apply to programs because of no home LoRs?

any help is appreciated. sabio, steptaker, lee applicant guide...anyone.

The best way to go is to have a combination of 3 US LoRs + 1 Home country LoR.

US LoRs are more valued by program directors but they also want to know about your background in your home country.

Which of the following is better?
A) 4 US LoRs
B) 3 US LoRs + 1 Home LoR
C) 2 US LoRs + 2 Home LoR

My choice is option B

It depends on what more you have done. If you just graduated then an LoR from college professor is a good idea but if you have long years of experience after graduation then it's better to get an LoR from that experience.

As for your other question, yes you will be fine.

Steptaker, can the home country LoR be a 2012 one if you are applying for 2014 match? I mean for e.g. if one's clinical experience or rotation in that particular specialty is in 2011/2012, would it be ok? Or does it have to be up-to-date?

hi add1!

i guess its better to have more recent lors .if you know the person well ask them to write the same things about you n mention that you worked earlier on but a recently dated one wud definitely be of more value.

Any clinical experience can be supplemented by an LoR, such as internships, clerkships, jobs, work, externships, observerships, ...etc

I'm pretty sure 4 US LORs trumps any other combo. PDs don't have any context to base the integrity of foreign letter writers on, even if it is a professor/dept chair...so a foreign LOR is not as valuable in their eyes. Of course, a foreign LOR is better than nothing and is certainly not seen as a negative thing. It is just not as valuable as a USLOR from someone at a renowned institution.

This is what many current IMG residents have told me, some of whom are very close with the PDs of their programs.

i have been told that 3 US lor plus i college LOR is better coz the PDs want to know how u were in school. as regards it being useless coz they dont know the home country LOR writer, that works even in the US lors too , coz 99percent of the time the PDs will not go about callin or even lookin up the US lor writers. i asked a PD whom i met today and he seemed to encourage 1 college LOR ,,, but again it might be different on a PD to PD basis but logically speaking it helps to have a LOR that describes u on a long term basis . hope this helps.
