H1 Visa What time to do Step 3 to get H1B Visa!

I had a question about visa sponsorship and here it goes-when do the programs typically decide which visa they would sponsor for the applicant-j1/h1b.

I mean, by what time should we complete our step 3 to be eligible for h1b visa? would it be okay to get it done with good score before ROL submission?

reply from the moderators would be highly appreciated.

Residency programs differ in their requirements, but generally speaking they want you to pass Step 3 before ROL by several weeks, so that in case you don't pass they start thinking of someone else.

This means, that you have to pass Step 3 at least in January.

@sabio: I still have a question....at this time I am ECFMG certified but step 3 is plan to be taken somewhere in november or beginning of december(can't study much because I have to take care of my son during the day); I would like to get internal medicine and H1B visa; I will get all my LOR's before sept 1st from 3 US attending physicians and the question is regarding my chances to get this visa(step 1 is 79/195 on 3rd attempt, step 2 CK is 99/230 and CS pass both on first attempt); I know is hard to predict this but what do you think about my chances regarding H1B visa and internal medicine residency(I am an IMG and I graduated in 2007); thank you so much for your help!

I can't really predict your chances of getting an H1B visa. All I can say that it's getting more and more difficult as programs steering away from H1 and going more toward J1 Visa.

The percentages of IMGs according to JAMA report in the year 2006 was something like (not sure of the exact numbers) as follows:

H1 Visa 11%
J1 Visa 18%
Green Card 25%
US Citizens 35%

That H1 Visa percentage might even be lower nowadays.

What are your credentials! What USMLE scores you have, what year you graduated, do you have USCE?...etc

I can't predict your chances without knowing your profile.

To be honest with you, your chances are not so good for an IMG.
You have to get USCE and US LoR and you have to pass the CS from first attempt and you have to get high score in CK in order to try to correct the damage from your failed Step 1 attempt.
To get observerships try to connect with everybody you know in US and you can also try contacting the Externships companies (all listed here).

Can I take Step 3 in the months aftet the match and before the residency starts i.e. April, May, June .. ? And is it a good idea or will I be busy preparing for my visa?

here is the situation:
1. if you look for J1 visa, you can take step 3 any time(aka, after the match, before match or even in your 1st year of residency, etc)
2. if you look for H1B visa, the situation is much different: I can tell you for sure that the requirements are different from program to program; this means that some programs require to have step 3 score byt the time you apply to their programs, some wants to have the score by the time of interview and some wants to have it before match day(at least 1-2 weeks before that); I don't think there is one program who says that you can take step 3 after the match day(if anybody knows something else, please post your opinion so we can see it too).

I hope this will answer your question.....good luck!
