J1 Visa Electives under the J1 VISA

Hello!

I have a specific question about the J1 VISA for clinical electives.

As many of you know, the J1 VISA has a specific condition: "Two-year Home-country Physical Presence (Foreign Residence) Requirement" this condition means that you will have to return to your home country for two years at the end of your exchange visitor program. But it only applies for 3 specific cases:
  • Government funded exchange program
  • Graduate medical education or training
  • Specialized knowledge or skill

My question is: will I fall under the 2nd case (Graduate medical education or training) if I'm only doing Electives at the US (and by that mean will not be yet graduated)? Will I have to stay in my home country 2 years after my Electives?

Hope someone can help me,
Best regards,
Calhad

Hi, you will not get J1 for electives, instead you will be on B1/B2 I guess or something elese which don't require this 2 years thing.
J1 is a working visa.

Agree with ApplicantGuide,

Electives do not sponsor J1 Visa, they only sponsor B1 Visa.

Did the elective program told you that they'll give you J1 Visa!

I dont think the two year rule will apply in this case. You will definitely not be doing graduate medical training!
You could send an email to your embassy (they usually have an email adress where you can ask questions like that. Just ask if the two year rule will apply if you do electives In the US while you are still a student!)

Hi DocMm!
I don't know If the visa officers will know... I think sabio mentioned something about that once.
I think it could hurt you. But it might be better if you mention it, in case they know already.
Sabio or anyone who knows about that, please help!
Good luck for your interview tomorrpw. What country are you having the interview in?

Did you also apply for the Diversity Visa? If yes, have you applied for your B1/B2 yet? I am applying from Pakistan.

No I didn't apply for DV yet. And not yet for B1/B2...
When will you find out if you get the DV?
And did the officer at the embassy know that you had applied for it?
