B1 Visa Research Assistant on Visa J1 or B1?

I was wondering if one could work as an unpaid research assistant on a B1 visa. And just to clarify, i'm talking about working as an assistant (unpaid, obviously)....not a research elective.

Yes. B1/B2 Visa.

You can't get it on J1 Visa.

Question whats the difference?

Hi,
Im planning to get some research experience soon. Is there a difference between doing a research elective and a research assistant from a residency point of view? if what we are doing is unpaid, isn't it research volunteer? which one has more weightage when we apply for residency? Kindly help..

-Appu
[P.S: I have a B1 visa]

Default Similar question!

I recently got offered a position for voluntary research at NYU.. I m an img so I have to go on either a b or j visa , the b visa I have on is valid for 10 years and I willbe applying for the next match ... Is there any disadvantage of taking a b visa over j for research except for the fact that u won't get paid?

From what I've heard from a few applicants who've applied this year and last year for match, Research assistant> Research elective. I'm not too sure, though.
