Default QUESTION about department of homeland security

i am an img coming with visa b1b2 after passing the interview in my country
now i came to do my cs and an observership for few months
when i entered usa at the airport the official told me and wrote on the paper in front of the visa that i am allowed to stay for 6 months only
so when i want to extend my stay a friend told me you have to go outside usa then return back but it is ok you ll not need to do an interview at the embassy again
so the question:
before the end of 6 months i should return to my home country or just get outside usa like to canada or mexico
