Unhappy Will I be in trouble?

I might get accepted to work as a research assistant -unpaid in Ohio. I hold a valid B1/B2 U.S visa which I had obtained for doing my elective last year. Am I breaking any rules here? Will I have trouble at immigration? The researcher is also asking me if I require a letter to come to the US. Should I go ahead ad ask her for that? Please help.

You can do voluntary research on B1/B2.
Make sure to explain the CBP (Customs and Border Protection) Officer at the first port of entry in US, what you intend to do during your stay on B1/B2 visa and show a letter of support from your research mentor, specifically stating that your research appointment is totally voluntary and you would bear the living expenses yourself.
