If u are on a short term visa, u have to exit USA in 6 months and then renter again. Short term J1 is issued for only 6 months.. and once u reenter u will have to pay ur SEVIS fees again..

It does not affect ur chances of visa again..

It takes about 3-4 weeks for it to get processed..

Hope this helps

Hi,
I have been offered a research position in short term J1 visa from may to Sept 2013. I intend to come back and go again in November in time for my interviews. Will it be possible? Do I have to reapply for my B1/ B2 visa status? Please advise if I should take up the offer or not. Thanks.
