J1 Visa J1 Research Visa

Hi. So I am applying for a J1 visa for research. But i had some doubts regarding the visa.

1. Is it true that once u get a J1 u always get a J1? Can i no longer be eligible for a H1B visa if i get matched in 2013 match. I will give my step 3 next month.

2. So if I get a J1 visa for research, will this period be counted in my J1 visa issued by ECFMG ? will the visa sponsored by ECFMG next year be of 6 years or 7 years?? I don't want to lose one year.. Will it affect my chances of a fellowship?

3. can i change the J1 Research to J1 ECFMG here in USA or i would have to leave USA and come back?

Hi rohit

1. Is it true that once u get a J1 u always get a J1? Can i no longer be eligible for a H1B visa if i get matched in 2013 match. I will give my step 3 next month.

techincally YES. Once you get J1 Visa you will attract a 2 year home return policy, which means that after you finish what you came here for (research) you have to return back to you home country for 2 years ( I am assuming that you are from India). You can change to H1B visa if you get either a waiver job here in the US or get your 2 year home return exempted, both of which will be very difficult (may be impossible). It will be easier to change to J1 clinical once you get a residency (again presuming you are going to try for one).....so all in all, you are better off doing a residency on J1 clinical and then apply for waiver jobs after your training.

2. So if I get a J1 visa for research, will this period be counted in my J1 visa issued by ECFMG ? will the visa sponsored by ECFMG next year be of 6 years or 7 years?? I don't want to lose one year.. Will it affect my chances of a fellowship?

No, 7 years start from the day your ECFMG sponsered J1 clinical Visa starts. As far as Fellowship is concerned, J1 is a better Visa...a lot of programs these days are only supporting J1 Visas as there are limited number of H1B petitions they can make and also it's expensive for them.

3. can i change the J1 Research to J1 ECFMG here in USA or i would have to leave USA and come back?

You can change J1 research to J1 clinical here in the US, provided you submit the ECFMG, two letters..one from you current employer supporting you for the residency and the other one from your future employer indicating your appointment. You will have the permit to stay in the country with DS2019, but you cannot travel without a Visa...for that, you have to apply for Visa in your home country, the first time you travel back....(I am not sure if we can apply in any other country)

Good luck!

Hi all , I have a question here .

I have a J1 research opportunity for 6 months till Jan 2014 and they said they can extend it later . My question is If I take up this SHOULD I HAVE TO BE ON THIS J1 RESEARCH TILL I APPLY FOR J1 CLINICAL ? I HAVE HEARD THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY GAP BETWEEN BOTH OF THEM. I WANT TO COME BACK TO INDIA AND APPLY FOR J1 CLINICAL VISA. IS IT OKAY IF I DISCONTINUE MY RESEARCH IN JAN, COME BACK TO INDIA. OR SHOULD I BE ON RESEARCH TILL MARCH 15 , PLEASE ADVICE ME

thank you

Question

I also have a similar question.

How do I have to time my J1 research duration such that I do not have issues converting to J1clinical? After finishing research can I go back home in dec or jan or do I need to be doing research until the residency match?

Do sponsors give you waivers for the 2 year rule? how easy is getting a waiver?

In case you are doing unpaid research are you still under the 2 year rule?

Thanks
