Default J1 research visa funding

Hi all,

can somebody please help me understand who can fund for your stay in US while on J1 research scholar visa. It is said that personal funds can only be 50% while the remaining should be from an outside organisation, company, govt, non govt anything.
What i am confused with is, how do we answer the ' what is the relationship to you' question, when it is not a personal funding. if there is some organisation who is funding you. the question is why are they funding you?

because i believe this question will also come up during the visa Interview. anybody who has been in this position can help out?

Thank you.

Get a home country hospital to make a fake letter that they are sponsoring you for the research. The hospitals mostly don't interfere. So at the end, you or your parents can fund you. Hope this helps.

thank you for replying. I already submitted a letter from a (private) company because the department said any letter of funding from the home country organisation/company/ hospital or anything would be fine. when i showed them the letter, they even accepted it.
i am worried now of being questioned in the interview, as to why any company would sponsor/ pay for for my stay? if it doesnt benefit them in any way.

any help on this?

Mention that the company has an affiliation with a few hospitals and this training of yours will help you in serving them later.

p.s. If the hospital you are going to do your research is a reputed one, the interview people won't question you a lot.

I hope what you say is true. It is uncomfortable being probed.

Will they check details of the company in anyway? then what is the answer to 'what is the relationship of the company to you'? sponsor/funding source/ relative/ friend/ any other better answer?

Also, I really appreciate you replying. Thank you so much.

one quick question, if you don't mind.? while filling the ds-160 form-
a question on current occupation is asked- since I will start research after being granted a visa, the answer for now is unemployed. but won't that look like a potential immigrant answer and become a red flag?

I don't think they will check the details of the company. If you are applying to residency this year you can tell the interviewers this.

I was in a similar position about 4 months ago. I told them I work for a hospital, which sponsored my visa. They never asked me my current employment during the interview and never checked with the hospital. They just ask you about the project you are going to be involved in and other related things.

Im sorry, Im a little confused here.

i am applying for residency this year. how does that answer the question on relationship.
the ds160 application asks-
who is paying for your trip?- ans- xyz company. (same as mentioned in ds 2019)
next question- what is your relationship to this company?

you told them that you work for a hospital in your home country who sponsored your visa? isn't the US hospital where we do research, sponsor our j1?
since you said, you're working in some hospital(in your home country), that seems logical and hence they probably didn't question you further on that. did you enter this information while filling the ds160 form, because they are asking the details of the hospital to be filled as part of current employment.

So the hospital in my home country sponsored the funding. (not my visa)

You can say that you are an employee of the company.

Yes, I did enter that information in my DS 2019 and had a letter from the hospital stating that as well for the interview.

I don't think there is much difference in whether you change from B to J or J to J. But it helps to know that to change from J research to J clinical is not a problem.

Please,
If I got a research position at mayo clinic. And now I have already B1 visa. And also I have interviews on next month that means I have to travel to the states. The May clinic wants J research, I feel it is risky to change visa status now??? So what to do please ?????

Hi everybody,

Taking it back to the OP's question I need a couple of clarifications if anybody would like to chime in.

I'll be starting as a research fellow in the us, and got offered a j1 research visa. I have, as others, stumbled on the rule about funding not coming directly from me.

I read your responses on procuring a letter from a hospital etc. and was wondering;

- Is it true that only 50% of the amount needs to be covered by a 3rd party?

- Said letter needs to be given to the research institution or to the embassy during interview?

- Any rough guide on what should be written in the letter, how formal does it need to be?

Thanks a lot in advance!
