i went to the embassy to get a visa for observership and they gave me only 5 months, and i cannot travel now bec i have financial issues.
my plan is to go for observership in january 2013, but my visa will expire in 25/2/2013
so my questions : is it ok to make a visa extension , and if i do so , would this affect my chances to get other b-1 visa later .

The expiration date on your visa means that you can enter US till that day. It doesn't mean you can stay till then, that part is decided at the Port of entry and usually everyone is given 6 months stay. so do not go for extension since you don't need it (and probably they won't give it). come back n apply again.

Yes. You have to tell them your reasons for coming to US.

Well I did my obsie on B1 only and I will be going to do it again in Jan. There's no point talking to consultants. They think everything you want to do in US needs a J1 visa.

And as for the visa expiry thing. I know that for a fact that it is the last date to enter the US and not the period to which you can stay.

As. Guys discussing this topic. I would like to discuss my issue too.
I have CS exam on 15 th may and I would like to do externship and observership after that. So all together I would be staying in US from may to oct. So if I get interviews in oct. I would be able to attend them but what if I get interviews in nov?
Can I travel again in nov.?
Or if not, can I shift my interview dates to dec.?
Any suggestion would be helpful. Thanks
