J1 Visa J2 Plans Cancelled, Can I go for Visit?

Hello everyone

This site has been very useful for me during my preparation and I am thankful to all the members of this forum .
I am currently in a huge depressing situation of my life and I will need your help.
Things have not been good at my end and I am very disappointed with life. My marriage was scheduled to happen this month and my fiance was a j1 visa holder. He was given only few days vacation to come to India for the marriage (and he would risk his job if he overstayed). As we were so short in time, we decided to apply for a j2 visa for myself before marriage so that there be no delay in accompanying him as soon as possible after marriage. (the other paperwork and all would already take a lot of time after marriage)
But things did not work out and the marriage did not happen unfortunately. I had made all the preparations and had directed my hardwork and time towards usmle preparation because of this. Now if this marriage does not happen, and if I wish to continue my exam preparation, only at least to take the test so that my hardwork does not go waste and wish to write the step 2 CK, can I apply for the visit visa for taking the exam? I had not scheduled the interview date for j2 visa yet, but j2 visa application form has been sent to the embassy.
What is my situation? I am already at loss at my personal life and am having a hard time dealing with it but I do not want to be at loss at least at my academic life as well. How bad is my state? I feel so dejected in life.
Please help
