Passport Type of US visa for USCE (externship)

I plan on taking a 12-week externship in the US soon, but I don't know which type of visa to get. I'm not currently a student.

From what I've gathered it's of course going to be a non-immigrant visa, and may be B1 or B2? I'm not sure about that.

Could anybody please help?

Hmm I am not sure but I guess a reguler tourist visa ( B1 ??). Anyway, where will you do your externship ? Did you use private company to help you finding it ?

The externship is based in Chicago, IL. It's going to be in a private practice of a relative, a US physician.

Take your invitation letter from the program where you are going to do your Externship stating they would require a B1/2 visa. If the consular has any doubts tell him that its just a training you wont be paid for it. Its not a big issue they know people go there for externship on a B1/2.
