I plan on taking a 12-week externship in the US soon, but I don't know which type of visa to get. I'm not currently a student.

From what I've gathered it's of course going to be a non-immigrant visa, and may be B1 or B2? I'm not sure about that.

Could anybody please help?

Take your invitation letter from the program where you are going to do your Externship stating they would require a B1/2 visa. If the consular has any doubts tell him that its just a training you wont be paid for it. Its not a big issue they know people go there for externship on a B1/2.
