California Externship in California

I live in CA. I am looking out for any hospital that offers externship / observership programs here. I dont know any doctors here. Could anyone help me out to get more information on this? I am on a dependent visa which doesn't allow me to work or study here. So will that become an issue to get into any of these programs? It will be very kind of you to help.

There is a new rule in California that prohibits hands on clinical experience for unlicensed doctors...so if you want to be licensed in California you have to be ECFMG certified & doing such years of Residency to get the state license.

So does that mean I need to have a state license to do observership also in CA? And could you also tell me if its really worth spending a lot of money on the externship programs? Whats the duration of externship they expect from us ?

There seems to be a misunderstand with 'externs are illegal in CA' but in fact it's not illegal to do externships in California. It is illegal to hire externs to 'practice medicine', which means no examining patients and managing patients without direct supervision from licensed doctor. However, It is completely legal to have externs assist in a doctor's clinic. This means that you can exam patient and more if the doctor has asked the patient and gave you permission.

Just like any medical student, you don't need to have ECFGM or PTAL to do an externship. You do, however, need a valid medical degree.

Here is the quote from Medical Board of California Newsletter July 2010: “If graduates are unable to gain admission into an accredited training program, they cannot gain clinical experience by working in a physician’s private office or clinic performing any duties other than those routinely fulfilled by a medical assistant. They cannot perform as a trainee (in a residency program) nor a physician assistant. International graduates may be employed as medical assistants in a physician’s office if they do not represent themselves as medical doctors nor exceed the duties specified in Business and Professions Code section 2069-2071 and Title 16, California Code of Regulations, sections 1366-1366.4.”
