Default My opinion

The choice of specialty may play role here, if you are looking for IM then do the IM or if you are looking for FM then do the FM.

However, if you don't have preference for either of them or if you are going to apply to both. Then, I'd choose the hospital setting. Even though it's only observership but the LoR would come much stronger there (I mean the origin of the LoR). In addition, enrolling in a hospital where they have residency program will set you the connections and the insider track that will later prove crucial when you apply for the match later on. Connections, can do it all!

I also suggest that you try to do them both, if that's possible.

Default requesting doctor

Thank You step taker ... i will try both .... Its true connection is very important ... ONE MORE OPINION .... I worked with an US doctor in april .... after i finish with him , i told him ... i will contact with him during residency application ... so if he know someone he can request for me ( he is a NJ cardiologist for more than 20 yrs with 2 hosp affiliation, 1 is uni and other general but they don have residency prog) ... he said ok , and let him know ... I dont know how much he can help me out but i should try ..... Now i am not sure how to approach him about this request for me .... and when is the best time to ask him about this ... ( Do i need to tell him that , in these hosp in Ny and NJ i m going to apply and if he knows some there plz request for me or something else ) ... i will contact him end of this month for LoR

Yes. Give him the list or residency programs that you will be applying for in his area. Also, ask him if he know residency programs in other areas.
Be straight forward, don't be shy, just ask him to talk to the people he might know in those residency programs.

Default Query for Step Taker

I have good Step scores.
I have gotten an observership for 2 months at a private hospital (not clinic) in florida. I dont know about the ethinicity of the Dr. yet. I have done 1 month electives before as a medical student at a university hospital in 2011 and I have LORS from them as well (which I hope they will renew and add my recent activities and achievements) I am also applying for teaching hospitals and will continue working at the teaching hospitals even after the september application (I plan to apply this year).
If I do attend my observership and do all the tasks my attending gives me and I get an LOR for him (even if he has the same ethinicity as me). Will it count? or am I wasting my time? Will I have a chance in the match?

I do not know why ethnicity would cause a problem for you.

Mayo is a great place to do observership.

Its not Mayo. I meant that if the doctor I got was of my country or ethnicity then would that be a problem, as long as the LOR is truly based on my performance.
