Question Clerkship is a must!

hey guys..

I am new to this forum. I want to know whether clerkship is must for USMLE as I have heard... can it be compensated with observership and step 3 with high score taken before the match.....

Med student clerkships in USA is not a must for the IMG, it's desirable and preferable, but it's not a must.

The idea is that residency programs in USA feel more comfortable taking you when they see that you are already exposed to the US health care system and to the society in general.

Therefore, it's recommended that you get US LoR and some form of USCE, such USCE can be in the form of clerkship (best), or electives (ranks 2nd), or externship or research (ranks 3rd), or observership (rank last).

USMLE Step 3 high score does help improve your profile but it does not have the impact that the USCE have on your chances of getting residency.

With clerkships is better, but without clerkships you can still match into residency, there are many other factors that play role.

Yes. Research is highly valued by residency programs, specially University programs.
