Listening Externship with FMG portal

I plan to take up the externship program with FMG portal. Could anyone give me more info about the program offered by them ? Or do you have any other company to suggest ? I heard that there are more chances of being matched in the place you do your externship. but there seems to be no university affiliated to FMG poratl. so how does the whole thing work ?

thanks. i read that and few other threads related to that. still i can't find my question answered. i want to know how is it easier to be matched in the same place from where you did your externship ? they dont seem to have any university affiliated to them ? or is it that my understanding of the entire process is wrong ?

If FMG Portal does not have rotations in University affiliated programs then you won't have the opportunity of matching in a program in which you had externship.

Did I answer your question!

Does it still hold good as USCE ? How valid are they ? If I get some LORs from them, Will that outweigh my CV when compared to others ?

Default Externships

Hello Geetha,

There are many IMG’s who have been successful in achieving a residency position without having done their “hands-on” clinical experiences in settings affiliated with residency programs. Although doing your clinical externships in a university affiliated setting would increase your possibility of networking with Residency Directors, you will want to keep in mind that the purpose of doing hands-on clinical externships is to gain clinical experience in the United States and to be able to solicit for U.S. LOR’s. Many IMG’s find that they gain a tremendous amount of clinical knowledge by rotating in an out-patient setting; the reason being that their time is spent working with multiple patients, as opposed to an in-patient setting where there is a possibility that they may only work with a few different patients. Gaining valuable USCE is very important because it shows Program Directors that you are current with U.S. healthcare and most importantly, not a liability. Furthermore, being able to obtain creditable LOR’s is crucial to making your residency application as competitive as possible. One recommendation to you would be to see how competitive your application is right now by using an online self-assessment tool called the Butterfly Calculation.

I see in your previous post that you are looking to make yourself more competitive and if possible receive hands-on clinical experience in California. Unfortunately I am unable to provide any information on specific clinical placement agencies, but I would like you to be aware of the legalities surrounding IMG’s doing any type of “hands-on” clinical experiences in the state of California. According the Medical Board of California, “physicians and program directors statewide are being warned not to let unlicensed physicians treat patients in their clinics and private practices”. Being that you are an unlicensed physician, you unfortunately would fall under this category. But there is hope for IMG’s in California! Our college offers a program which allows IMG’s the ability to obtain legal hands-on clinical experience in the state of California. I would certainly be able to assist you in your needs and your pursuit towards residency, as our college provides that and goes beyond to provide professional mentorship. I hope this helps answer your questions, as I wish you the best of luck. If you have any further question, do not hesitate to message me!
