Question How to approach a private clinic for observership?

Hello everyone,

I have some private clinics near my house where I am planning to request for an externship...but I have a confusion...how to approach them? what to say to the receptionist to increase my chances? or should I call them first and if they give me a positive response then go? (and of course that means that I don't know any of the doctors personally)

I would like to know the opinion of the forum staff also...

please reply!

Calling them does not work (unless you specifically request to make an appointment with the MD there).

Go there, and ask to speak to the clinic manager. When they ask you who you are, tell them you are Dr. (....).

If they ask you what is it for? tell them that I want to discuss with the manager about volunteering opportunities in the clinic.

Then when you grab the manager, speak to him frankly, tell him all the truth about yourself and then focus on the word "volunteering", try to avoid the words "observership" or "externship". By the way, most of them, won't allow you hands-on until they know you very well. Therefore, do not talk about it. Just say that you want to shadow and observe and that you won't be touching or talking to patients.

If they tell you that the manager is not there, ask to make an appointment.

Of course, don't forget to take a copy of your CV with you and give to the manager.

Some of them, might be asking you for liability insurance, tell them that you'll be ready to pay for it if needed.

Go during the morning time, not evening time. Private clinics are less busy during the morning hours.

Many US docs, have no idea at all about the suffering of IMGs in getting USCE, therefore you need to explain for them the situation and tell them that you are willing to volunteer your time, just to get acquainted with the US health care system.

Let me warn you, that out of 10 clinics you'll visit, you might get to meet the manager in 2-3 of them only. In most cases, the receptionist will try to kick you out.

Good luck

Thank you so very much Step Taker for such a detailed response, just another thing, how to deal with the receptionist? Should I then try to speak with the doctor(if possible at all) or make an appointment with the doctor instead? Does that work?

As I told you in my initial post, it might not always work. Sometimes you have accept the fact that it can not be done.
If the receptionist refused to give you access to the doctor, then maybe you try at some other time.

Hi StepTaker!

Can a physician in private practice give you an externship? Or does it have to always be affiliated with a university or a hospital?

Yes it's possible.
The private clinic does not have to be affiliated.
However, it depends on the State laws and how far that private doctor would wish to go with you.
