Question Research elective at JHU but no clerkships

Hey forum,

I am an intern in India. I have secured a research elective at Johns Hopkins university for 8 weeks. I am also spending time at my mentor's lab in India. I am assured of 2-3 US publications as a co author. Goes without doubt that I will get a good LoR.

However I was unable to get a clerkship.

I aspire to pursue internal medicine residency in the US. I will be applying for a match in 2013 and have not given my steps yet. I am willing to do observer ship /externship in the USA if possible.

My questions are:
How much would the research elective help my application?
Taking all the things into account and supposing that I get good USMLE scores, what are my chances of getting a residency?

I know that nobody can make a solid prophesy about the possible future, but a rough idea would be welcome.

Regards

Mukul

hey I am an IMG from India. I'll graduate in may 2014. m eager to get a research electives in John Hopkins in internal med (preferably in cardiology) because I want to take cardiology as fellowship once I get IM residency). I called them up to find out the earliest time period to apply for April-May 2013(9weeks) and they told me to do it in October 2012.
other than sending e-mails to the research directors, what should i do to increase my possibility to get a good cardio research electives at j.hopkins? i have completed my BLS training (AHA accredited). would that help me for the same?

I gave my TOEFL but I didn't send them my score since they didn't ask. Scores don't matter but if you have given any steps so far you should send it. Leave the Hopkins bagde# blank, you will get an number after you get accepted and register for your elective.
I don't know the probability of getting accepted but I would suggest you to mention attendings with a lot publications on your application, For example go to pubmed search an attending see the total number of publications by them and check if they have any recent publications, someone with more publications and recent publications probably could use more people working under them. That's what I did and It worked for me.

Hi, Mention the area of research or the attending name. You do not need any letters from the attendings for the application to process.
