Question What is considered USCE?

Hi,

I have been asking this question to myself as I am in a bit of a peculiar situation regarding "USCE". I have:

1. Just completed a fellowship in a US medical school on the east coast for one year

2. It was a competitive fellowship for which I applied and was awarded to me after a rigorous process: application, personal essay, short listing interview, then again final interview by the program
3. I worked closely with residents, rotating students, nurse practitioners, Chief Nursing Administrator, Clinical professors of IM/ OBGYN/ Cardiology of the University Hospital (UH)
4. I observed residents, doctors in the EM/ IM/ Ped/ OBGYN. Even interacted with patients, took history, review their medicine charts even interviewed and pilot tested health literacy tools in the hospital
5. Created health literacy tools for the five most frequently diagnosed diseases at the UH; i,e; CHF, CRF, Asthma, DM and HTN (these are now used by the UH)
6. Presented my works at two national conferences in Minnesota and California

Would this be regarded as USCE?

Please, advise.

This definitely sounds like USCE.

But one question, what do you mean by fellowship? Is it fellowship or observership! Did you or are you going to get a degree/certificate of your training!

This was one year long Fellowship for which I received salary/ payment, an employment contract and an experience certificate. No, I did not get any degree or training certificate as this was not a training per se.

I know fellowship sounds very training oriented but this wasn't that. This was not "observership" either. Definitely my contract mentioned me as a "Fellow"

Very interesting.

Yes. That's definitely a superb kind of USCE.

Make sure you get some great LoRs from your supervisors.

You just made my day! Two of my supervisors (Assistant Prof of Medicine, and OB GYN) promised me LoRs whenever I need it. Also, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) said she would write. Do you think I should collect all three, including the CNO? I don't know whether a nursing personnel would have an impression on PDs or not.

I am an IMG. No, I only passed step 1. As I have mentioned earlier, this was an internationally competitive Fellowship completely unrelated to ECFMG/USMLE. I obtained a J-1 visa to pursue this fellowship which means I am not a green card holder.

Hope this helps.
