Alabama Observership in University of Alabama

Guys;

I have been trying to get electives for so long and finally was able to get one at University of Alabama but the sponsor I am going to work under he told that 'you have to come here as an observer and no course credit will be given to you'.

Please would anyone tell me what did he mean by this?

'Observer' means can I have hands on experience? can I ask him for an LoR?

This means that you'll shadow him during rounds and clinic but there will be no certificated at the end of your rotation.

Yes, you can ask him for letter of recommendation at the end of it.

Q) Is it considered USCE?
A) Yes. but externships and electives are certainly better.

StepTaker would you please explain to me how far an observership at a university hospital gonna help me? I have used the search option here and came to know that this is not of much use like an elective. This is of use to some extent only if we managed to get an LoR from the faculty?

Another thing I want to ask is how would a program director know that we have done an observership or an elective or an externship, is it only through our CV and LoR or is there any other way?

An observership at a University is setting certainly going to help boost your ERAS profile. Yes, electives are better but observership is also OK.

The only way residency programs make sure you've done an USCE is either by an LoR or by an official certificate that originates from the institute. Such certificates are usually not given in observerships so the only way is by getting an LoR.

Step taker thanks for all the info.

would you clarify a few more things for me?

The university i got accepted wants me to come on a j1 visa.but as far as i know if we go on a j1 visa we are not allowed to do any thing except going to that particular university.but i want to do few more electives in other universities too.i dont want to use this trip just to do one observership.

Another thing is there is this 2 year home country rule for j1 visa,will this rule also applies to electives?please answer this for me.i ve enquired about this a lot and failed to get adequate info.i even asked the elective coordinator she told its not them who decide that,its decided by the visa officer.

And considering all this what would you suggest is the best step to do?
