Question I thought observership counted as clinical experience?

I have read in one of the programs of residency that they require clinical experience not observership or externship
I thought that they are clinical experience so what is (clinical practice)?

Clinical experience refers to Clerkships where u rotate with medical students and see , touch and interact with patients on your own..
Since we cant do all of this in observerships, they are not counted as clinical experience by some...

I am Sorry but i dont think so..
Even if the attending is kind enough to let you work under him and see patients on your own, it will still be an Observership.. This is because u are no more a student and also are not board certified to see patients in USA..

He can mention that in your LOR that you were good and so he even gave you patients to see and manage, but thats it..

It would still not be counted as clinical experience if the application doesnt include observerships in that category..

Many residency program directors accept observerships as clinical experience. I know many many applicants who have done only observership and were able to get into good residency programs (even though those programs mentioned in their website that they need USCE).

Now, is it better than externships or electives or clerkships or research? Answer is NO. Observership is at the bottom of the list.

But it's better than staying home!

Default Us clinical experience

Ok , let me clarify

1. If you are doing an observership and the attending allows you to touch the patients and take history than it will be counted as an Externship which is Hands on Us Clinical experience and is counted by all the programs.

2. I totally agree with Sabio's post as well

3. clerkship is the best for of USCE but one can only do it during Med School

I have been told (my friends that recently pre-matched) that doing an observership under a physician affiliated with a university hospital might just have more weight than an externship under a private practitioner. I can't comment about that personally, but I'm just passing on what I heard. Makes great sense, but I'm sure it is quite difficult to find a university affiliated doctor to observe under.
