Question Does Research in biology help?

Hey guys,
I have got my MD in 2010,I am an IMG and a US citizen and I was wondering if doing a research in the biology and tissue engineering would help, I have done 2 months observership and now I am thinking of volunteering in research or working as a general practitioner outside the US.
I am planning to apply in the next match for IM.
I finished step 1 220 ,CS pending,so please guys let me know what do you think!
any suggestions appreciated.thanks
