Question Is doing an internship important???

I graduated and got my diploma a few months ago without having to do 1 year of post grad training. Now am in the US and i have already started my step 1 prep. Before i continue, i would like to know if doing an internship is mandatory to increase my chances in the match.
Also, if it is, how is it done in the US(for a permanent resident)?
thanks!

Do you mean the rotating internship at your home country or and PGY-1 in the States which is also referred to as the intern year?

Good time to pick up ward skills (suturing, starting IVs, ABGs, etc.) as well as study for boards. That is just my opinion though. My school required that it be done (it's part of the curriculum).
