Idea!

Hi Seetal,
From what I have come to know, paid research is difficult to come by for IMGs unless one knows someone internally to recommend you [Maybe an MS Biotech, Biomed student, or a Post Doc]. A lot of residency aspirants I've come across are doing unpaid research at NYU. so maybe you can try there too. The "rule of fives" while applying for electives holds good for research too -if you email 500 people, you'll get about 50 replies out of which 5 will be positive. I was advised to try the big names like Harvard, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Tufts and Northwestern, as there are a lot of studies going on, and because they are always looking for people to work. Hope this helps.

I want to go for research as my step 1 score is very low of 205.
Will I get any research opportunities and also how can I approach them. I mean how do I know what researches are going on and whether they have positions.
I am very disappointed of my scores because I think that would also diminish my chance of getting research and even residency in the long run, though I have observership at Cleveland in july but I am not excited about it anymore because of the score. Please help how can I make my application stronger. I want to match for paediatrics. Any chance??

I dont think your score will deter them from taking you in. Just go to the website of the institute and if you look around, they'll have a list of studies/ researchers. The only way to secure a research position is to do your homework first before mailing them. Write a person specific email with details, rather than sending a common mail to everybody asking for research. Research combined with USCE will help in cushioning not so good USMLE scores. All the best.

thanks for the information, but what do you mean by homework. Do I have to find out all the researches that the person I am applying to is involved in or do I have to ask them what I am interested in. Please throw some light on on this.

I think the best approach would be to go through all the researches they are involved in, choose the one which interests you, and mail them regarding that. That's what I meant by 'homework'.
