Looks like a decent plan! You are applying in advance and during the winter months, so hopefully something will come through. Apply to a decent number of places (at least 10), try to get a sub-internship as a letter from a subI is highly regarded compared to an elective (these are also called advanced clerkships/electives; very few places offer them like mayo, cleveland, harvard and limited others). That's basically it, research the eligibilty requirements of universities well, apply to a decent number, try for electives in sub specialities you are interested in pursuing after residency and try to get a subI. Good luck!

Hi. sadly unlike observerships/interviews having contacts will not help in getting electives (unless you know people in the office of student/international affairs or residency PD) as you would have to apply via university. There are a few places that take in international applicants like UAB only if you have a faculty member who sponsors you but I do not know anyone there. you just have to try your luck by directly applying via the university international student elective program.

Post Clinical electives. Help!

Hi, i'm an IMS from india as well, will be starting my internship in april, i'm yet to give my step 1 and planning to give it in November.
So is it possible for me to apply for an elective after i have given my step 1? since i will only have 4 more months of internship left, and how many months in advance do i need to apply if i want to go for electives in December?
Also, what are the chances of securing an elective before taking step 1?

Any help in this matter would be appreciated!

Have a look at this thread
Questions regarding application process for medical electives.

U have to apply 4-6 months prior to your desired date. (Very few like Harvard let you apply as close as 2 months prior to starting the elective)

Default Break during internship.

Thank you so much for the info!! it really helped!

i've got another doubt.. If i decide to take 6 months off from internship to prepare for step 1, do i have to explain the reason for taking a break during the interviews? and is it OK to take such a long break? or will it be counted negative against me?

You will have to explain any gap. Most PDs understand the Indian system of medicine and will look to see if u have completed the internship within one year of finishing final exams. But if u get good scores and do electives, u can explain the gap saying u wanted to obtain US clinical exposure.

Some universities may have a cut off score for TOEFL. You will have to contact each university independently and find out if they are willing to accept your application with the score. You can find the list of places at electives.us
