Hi;

Regarding the processing time for observership is about 3-6 months before your start date, it depends mainly on the student load for that observership.
Otherthing is that many of these hospitals need ECFMG certified applicants

Hope this helped!

Yes, you got it right.
For a of list of hospitals that provide such experience, you either go to ACGME website where you can select the program you want& the state. Then list of hospital that offer it will appear then you check their website to check if they have any
observership. Or depends on your connections with medical professional.

This is what i know as i'm not applying to any surgical speciality.

Best of luck

Listening USCE

Hey nitin,
As you know we are on same boat for step 1 and may be further exams. But recently i inquired in some universities for USCE. So just sharing my experince with you.
# First of all you have to mention that- Are you looking for elective, externship or observership.
# If you are already an graduate then certainly you can't get elective (as it is for med. students only)
# If you are looking for observership and as i read your post you are looking for orthopadic surgery. You must know that as its very competitive field and i think not much hospitals provide observership for this major. So i recommend you start searching from now on. Email different university or hospital and try to search about it.
Now you may ask where should i search about this and the answer is "GOOGLE": google know everything. (someone replied me same and i must say she was right).
# most of programs of observership will ask you about your step 1 or step 2 scores. Some even ask for ECFMG certificate.
# My personal experience- i emailed nearly 50-60 programs but got the same reply. "thank you for your interest in our program but we don't offer any observership or research opportunity"
but i must say keep trying.
# last but not the least. Externship by different agencies. They will charge you more money but they can get you any major or department according to your preference and interest. (i haven't tried them personally but anyways will have to try them for sure)

That's all i have in my mind right now. If any further questions feel free to ask. but as i am also not expert on this.
So i welcome more comments regrading this.

That free observership is in Cleveland Ohio. But they have list of requirement. You can find about that in USMLE forum USCE sub forum.

Hi Dr Nitin, I was interested for the externships in NYC and read through this thread and got to know that you have a senior who has contacts who can help me out with the same, the externships! Would you be kind enough to help me out with this doctor? Thank you and appreciate your time in this!
