I'm doing an elective in Cardiothoracic Surgery over the month of January. I haven't done any of the USMLE Steps yet. It was not needed for this application!

Ok good to hear. How long was your Personal Statement and did you get in contact with any surgeons in advance to support your application.

Yep got in touch with the Cardiothoracic team before applying for the elective. Personal Statement was 1 page long - about 250 words? Can't remember the specifics but go by the guidelines outlined on the Yale Electives page. Don't go over the recommended limits!

How long did it take from sending your application until you got accepted?

Not very long at all - considering they have quite a few applications to sought through. It probably took ~2-3 months to hear a response.

Congrats on nabbing yourself a great rotation, sword!

May I ask how you got in touch with the cardiothoracic surgery department?
The only "faculty" I have any sort of connection with is in bio, and I was wondering if it's really okay to randomly ask your department of choice if they'd want to sponsor you for a rotation, even before you send in your application.

hey, After sending in your application to Yale, did you make any attempts to correspond with them? Via email or phone? It has been 4 months since i applied for a February elective (2013) and have not yet received a reply

hey,

I too have applied to yale for march/aprl electives '13 in IM.. i did so almost 45 days back.. havent received a single mail from them till now!
I have called them a couple of times.. (its really tough to reach the concerned lady as her number is always on voicemail) though she checked into her system and confirmed that i have been logged into it, but regarding the status of my application she said i will have to mail them.. i did so but am highly doubtful whether or not they will reply to it..

I would say you call them and confirm the status of your application as four mnths is a pretty long tym.. Do let us knw the response! best luck

Hi all
With my experience, Yale is definitely an awesome place to do electives.
However they may not be very efficient (for IMGs in particular) with their elective application processing. I had seen the load of applications there and it does take quite long to review them . I wouldnt just sit back and wait to hear from them. I hope you guys got the message.
Wish you all the best!

Hey,
Thanx !
Yea thats what I am doing, calling them repeatedly, but what should I say.. once they say wait!!!? Weill cornell and yale are my last hopes for now! Other places (NIH & Northwestern, where i got a rejection mail) were prompt in their replies ( Am still unable to figure out the reason of my rejection ) Here its been 45 days!

Sorry to hear that.. I really have no idea how rejections occur. I'm 90% positive it's simply that they're fully booked. Let's hope your response is taking so long because they're finishing up your acceptance package!

For me, Cornell has yet to reply to my email application, and I just found out I'm not eligible for Yale right after completing my app (no US citizens allowed). UCSD at least, was kind enough to send me a quick rejection, about one or two weeks after they received my app.

How long did it take for Northwestern to say "no" to you? As of now, they and Harvard are my only hope!

Heyy! All the best to you with your elective applications..
NW was prompt, they took around 20 days after their first email ( confirming the receipt of the application ).. Its been 2 mnths i sent them my email app to WC, no clue what they are upto.. although i did recv the confirmation mail in lyk 35 days ( it took me longer, coz they were sending it to a wrong email!! ).. How many days back did you send your app to WC?

With NWU i figured out that the main reason for my rejection was applying to IM subspecialties... NIH i still dont understand.. its said good marks in the med school, but I knw a fella who apparently has lower scores than mine in med school, and got into NIH electives last yr.. So i guess its more about luck!

Good luck with Harvard, there are fair chances of one getting accepted there.. I cudnt apply there, coz my med school wasnt in their list..

Hey everyone and nitika,

We seem to be in a similar boat...rejections aplenty from NIH , NW , and Weill Cornell despite early application and good Toefl score.

If Weill cornell is nt replying yet it means they have u on waiting list...waiting for someone to cancel...if no one does cancel...they will send rejection as they did to me.

NW rejects smoothly and am still wondering why

I have also applied for march , jan for Psychiatry Electives ---- YET TO GET A RESPONSE , though the coordinators told me that applications for 2013 have only recently been sent to the departments for approval...and they too are awaiting replies

SUGGESTION to NITIKA -

if youre med school is listed in FAIMER which i am sure it must be...write to harvard they will include ur school in the list
I did the same...and they did
am waiting for reponse from yale before applyin for harvard so that my dates dont clash (assuming i get acceptance frm yale...which almost seems impossible rt now)

BTW - i got feb elective at Univ Of Toronto

just from my experience..for all the fresh elective applicants. Please dont keep wondering about reasons for rejections. You are only wasting time.
There are thousands of applications to process for a couple of positions. Looking at the math, there are many with exactly the same or better credentials as yours.
There is no scale, so you cant say that because my senior got in with lesser scores I am sure to be through! This helps as a guideline only.
The only thing you can do is give your best. It does depend on luck many times.

What did you write on the form where they asked you how many patients did you examine and took history in all different clerkships?

I serious't know if I performed physical examination on 100 or 200 patients.

for WC people applying for april and may have mostly got rejected except a few who are still waiting for their replies...

What's WC?

I hope to have good chances at Yale, I talked to a faculty member and put his name in the spot on the application.

I talked to him in September and applied a week ago. My vaccination titers took awhile to be printed...several reasons for that.

I wrote him an email with 5 LORs and my CV and he immediately replied with a CC to the Program Directors secretary and some official in charge saying that he wants me on his service... but I believe that he has to hold a spot for me. Do you think I should write him again?

What Department do you want to apply to, you can also send me a pm if you don't want to tell here.

You can always give it a try and try to contact a faculty member, but don't choose the program director, choose someone lower.

i applied way early in June 2012
but that did not matter as they started processin 2013 dates in september itself

i only applied to psych branches , got in to substance abuse psych -- which was the elective where i had got in touch with the faculty as well .

Give them a call...they are usually very friendly

Hello Suraj,
Yea u should call up Nickia Corley and ask...most times she will b on voice mail...but keep trying
As for contacting departments, i have no idea to be honest whether that would be helpful at this stage
Still you got nothin to lose...try it.

still pending... but Mrs. Corley said something like:" your first elective seems to be secured because you have a sponsoring faculty member."

Keep in touch about your progress
