Arrow Long and difficult road ahead

Hi Sparkle,

That's an ambitious dream.

It's not impossible but it's very very difficult and you have to be willing to fight for it.

Here's what you should do
  • Get 99 in Step 1
  • Get 99 in Step 2 CK
  • Pass the CS from first attempt
  • Come to USA
  • Join cardiothoracic programs as research volunteer or observer (unpaid job)
  • Make connections with the surgeons here
  • Do research publication in your name in high profile US journals
  • Show dedication and determination
When do all these things, there a chance that you can get into cardiothoracic residency.

Is it possible for an IMG to complete all those steps within 3-4yrs?and then applying for residence?i think if an IMG dnt apply for residence within 3yrs of graduation getting a residence become more difficult.isn't it?

If you are in final year, try to get electives now, its hands on clinical experience that gets you US LORs as well. Trust me there are externships in good hospitals so USCE after graduation is almost impossible unless you are willing to settle for private clinics and pay thousands of dollars. Secondly, take your exam soon after graduation, I took step 1 after 7 months of graduation, two of my friends took it in 4th year and final year!! We are all from Pakistan. So yeah its all possible if you schedule it the right way and work hard. Best of luck.
