India electives/clerkships without usmle step1

Hi..

I am from India.. in my 9th semester of m.b.b.s... i.e my fourth year..

I have heard and researched a lot about doing electives in the final year (internship) of medicine.. but I don't know how feasible it is as i have not given my USMLE step 1. I plan to give my USMLE step 1 after completing my internship.. i.e in 2012. I am in a dilemma whether to go ahead and apply for electives now.. or to wait till i give my USMLE step1 and go for an externship. I don't know anyone in the u.s to help me regarding this.. kindly advise.

Although it depends on your particular personal circumstances. But the general advice is that doing electives while still a student is highly regarded and easier to get than doing externships after you graduate.

It's certainly better to go for the clerkships with your Step 1 results in hand but that does not mean that you can't get a clerkship without it. Most hospitals do not have a strict requirement for that but it's rather a preferred criterion.

Sorry If I interrupt your work Lee , but I want to help too.
Dear appu you should start to search now.
try to search on web for universities & their elective requirements.
If you have friends in US -either residents or faculty doctors- they would help you to get elective.

You can find some links here from Sabio-USMLE Staff :

Finally, if you did not get an elective, try to get observership it is still better than nothing.

Good Luck

Idea! It depends on your money!

It depends on your money.
Elective ( less degree observership) will help you very much in Residency.
Not only you will get letters of recommendation that is very important beside USMLE scores, but you will also make connections with doctors.

There are many agents that offer elective, you can check this thread :
Paid Externships for IMGs

It costs about $ 3500 per months including Malpractice insurance.
To be honest, it is very expensive. The other thing that I heard, these agents provide electives in community hospitals & private clinics.

In my opinion, if it is affordable to you to pay this amount of money.
Try to pay it for Harvard University $3600/month or Yale University $2500/month. The latter one includes malpractice insurance.

Good luck

Correct Answer where are you right now?

if you are doing your M.B.B.S from INDIA as i m thinking. Then no need to worry about that...................you finish your MBBS first..........i would suggest. Then you prepare for STEP 1.I don"t think so you would get enough time for preparing for step 1 in 9th semester if you miss it in 6th-7th semester THOSE TIME YOU HAVE MORE TIME TO STUDY,Study for your 9th semester 1st..................IF YOU ABLE TO TAKE OUT TIME now also, you can prepare for step 1 first.\ or after finising Internship........................ After that you do your elective / Clerkship.............

hi,
i am in the 4th year of medicine.. so i am not elegible for externship.. as i have not graduated yet..
as far as i have heard externships are done only after finishing the course..
electives are usually done during the final year of med school (i.e internship in india).. do the paid agents help us in getting electives also? or only externship?

hello dr.anant
thank u for the help.. i am in my fourth year m.b.b.s (9th sem) in bangalore.. as i mentioned above as far as i know electives cannot be done after i graduate they are to be done in the last year of med school (internship in india) .externships/observership are done only after graduation.. i have heard from a few ppl that doing a clerkship/ elective gives us a higher chance of a residency there. that is why i am trying to get info on the same.

Don't take the title as it
If you read the first post in the thread you will notice that it is not only for externship, but it is also for Elective & observership.

Question Vsas/ eec

during my search of clerkships i came across a few colleges asking us to apply through VSAS (visiting student application service), in which international med graduates were instructed to use EEC (extramural electives compendium).. what exactly are these? are there any additional requirements to be fulfilled to apply?..
kindly help..

VSAS is for US visiting students ( & some Canadians) only. They use it for applications....
It works like a coordinator between students & universities.

EEC is for International visiting students. It shows a list of Universities that accept international medical students...
It is just a list...it is not designed to coordinate between you & universities.
So you have to know universities in the list & start to search for elective on each university website.

Question electives at harvard-worth it?

hello,
i was just compiling and filtering a list of med schools i should apply to for electives. i understand the importance of electives in boosting our chances of securing a residency, but i still have a few doubts lingering on.

1] electives at Harvard- they are offered for $3700 per month. Is this really worth it? Its a huge amount!! does "Harvard" the name, make a difference?

2] duration of electives- how long is a clerkship considered appropriate enough, i.e. when i apply for residency? can anyone grade the duration of usce..[for eg. 3 months-very good, 1-3 months -good, <1 month-poor]

kindly advice.

If you have money go for it...Harvard name deserves
The ideal period of USCE is one year!....6 months would be very good...3 months are good
but try to find hands on electives not observerships

Goodl Luck

Hi appu, I'm also a usmle aspirant. Im in a dilemma. Did you get matched? If so, how did you go about it? Where did you do your clerkship/externship/observerShip? Im almost at the end of my internship. Completion is in about 2 months. I was thinking of not taking the completion and instead apply for clerkships since it carries more value in terms of getting matched. Your help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Imchen, I'm from India. I just completed my internship this month. I haven't received my completion yet. Is it possible to apply for clerkship now? My graduation will officially be either in the month of feb or march of 2016, but my completion date would me march 4th, 2015.

Thumbs Up yes u can do but...

well actually one can apply for electives before internship is over, but if you have not appeared for any usmle exams, then you have to appear for toefl as far as I know, and toefl preparation as well as exam would take about 2-3 months....in short you can apply for electives after u have your toefl score
good luck....
