Question What went wrong with my elective applications?

hello everyone!

I, have applied for electives at four places... NIH, Northwestern, Weill cornell, Yale... I did so almost 45 days back, and have applied for the months of March/April/May 2013 ( So i believe i meet their criteria of applying 6 mnths in advance of the start date of electives)

To my dismay, I got a rejection from NIH and Northwestern ( had applied with my toefl score R 24/ L 28/ S 26/ W 27), i had applied to the subspecialities of IM, as i want to do a residency in IM..

Dunno what went wrong with my application.. I had come up with decent SOPs, LORs from my college, CV

Now waiting for a response from Weill Cornell and Yale!!

Thumbs Up

Your TOEFL scores are good. congrats! There are many who score above 110 though.
I havent seen any Indian student doing medicine elective at NWU. NIH requires great grades in school.
P.S. Please ask seniors or friends for the departments they could squeeze in. Not all are practically available.

Oh okay! If i apply to NWU again which specialties shld i go for? (The most favourable mnths for me are March/Aprl/May,, even though my internship officially ends in December 2012, but somehow i am managing to extend it till may)

Are you sure they let you reapply after rejection? I doubt.
I already mentioned the easy-to-get departments.

These days universities are only accepting students from medical schools whose students have already been there. I've been in your situation and wasted a lot of time, effort and money.

NIH rarely accepts students. You need a stellar personal statement to get through to them. The people I know who got there were extremely good with English.

NW is very competitive. IMGs only get electives in peds, radio, surgery, etc.

Cornell is again really tough to get in. The problem is that it is a favorite among AMGs. They love that place.

Yale might accept you but it is really a pathetic place to go. Not worth the money. And it's medical school isn't considered anywhere near the top.

If you've applied to Yale then why not to Harvard? You will definitely get there. Give the coordinators a lot of choices when you apply and you will get it. Harvard is considered the mecca of medicine and any letter from any physician there will put a gold star on your CV.

I'd suggest you give off your Step 1 as it will open more doors for you at some really good places like Cleveland clinic, mayo clinic, etc.

thanks a lot for your reply...thought of the calling the elective co ordinator...but i m kind of worried whether this will irritate them and will end up in me losing the elective??

Shall i contact the division head of the depts i have applied to and let them know how much interested i am do to an elective under them and tell them that i have sent in my applications a month ago??...will that accelerate my application process...or will it affect my chances

That will accelerate your chances of not getting anything there. DO NOT contact the doctors and the departments. Call and ask the coordinator about your application. I've heard people doing that for Yale since they don't reply to emails often.

Cross-posting from the Yale thread but..

A few days ago, I got my rejection from Northwestern for this winter, Anesthesiology. Took a while to post here because I was still reeling from the disappointment.
Took about a whole month from their application reception email. I wanted to go to Chicago so badly..

What really got to me was how they took so long for the rejection, and for it to come the DAY after Romney loses the election. I know they could have just sat on it for a while and the election just got them into gear again, but I can't help but think about all those post-election, retaliatory layoffs that are on the news these days.
