to Bhavesh Kaswala: The application fee at Mount Sinai is $1000 and tuition fee is $2000 per four-week-elective. It is advisable to apply early.. around 6 months in advance. I sent my application (for elective in feb 13) in mid-august and received acceptance in october-end.

Default clinical electives after step 1?

hello everyone!
i am a 4TH year medical student. Can anyone plz tell me if its better to give step 1 in the beginning of 5th year and then go for clinical electives or should i apply now for clinical electives in the US THAT donot require step 1?
so what is preferable? step1 and then clinical electives or otherwise/
I am in a fix right now since almost 80% universities in the US are asking for step 1 as a prerequisite....plz help!..i'd be too grateful!

Hi everyone,

Just spoke with another IMG from Jordan than completed one elective rotation in Mount Sinai NYC. He shared with me that he had a great experience practicing clinical skills under the supervision of Cardiology Physicians. During his 4 weeks stay he managed to work with 3 different Physicians and secured a total of 3 LORs.

This is a major concern and should be avoided for the following reasons:
1.) In the US one US clinical rotation is an average of 4-8 weeks.
2.) 1 Clinical Evaluation and 1 LOR should be obtained per clinical rotation.

It is obvious from the limited time spent with the 3 physicians that the IMG didnt have enough time to practice multiple clinical skills and to showcase his skills. Therefore the LORs obtained were most likely "cookie cutter" versions and not personalized to what he was able to show during his rotation.

For recent FMGs/IMGs that can come to the US and complete a portion of their Internship/Core/Externship rotations make sure to complete each rotation in a different facility and under the supervision of a different US Physician. A portion of internship and elective rotations can be completed in teaching hospitals, community hospitals, private practices and clinics as long as the supervisory board of your medical school approves it first.

For FMGs/IMGs that have completed all Internship/Core/Externship rotations you have the opportunity to complete Physician supervised insured hands-on clinical rotations in the US by being paired with Physicians working in Teaching Hospitals, Community Hospitals, Private Practices and clinics.

The main purpose of completing hands-on clinical rotations in the US is for:
- USCE
- Network with US Physicians and Residency programs
- Clinical Evaluations and LORs
- Prepare for residency in the US

If you keep this in mind you will be able to maximize each clinical rotation completed in the US.

Best - Victor

Mount sinai charges $1000 for application and $2000 tuition for one month!!! Oh my GOD! Things have changed a lot. 2 years ago when I did my electives the costs were 300 for application and 200 for tuition, so 500 totally.
$500 2 years ago VS $3000 now!!!

These kind of clinical electives (clerkship) are only for medical students who are yet to graduate.. those who have already graduated can go for observership/externship etc at other hospitals who offer them.

I think it is better to have a step-1 score before applying for electives, as most of the universities now require step-1 for clinical electives. Yet, some places like Mount Sinai, Yale, etc still do not require step-1 at present.
I would suggest you to prepare well for step-1 and appear for it only if you are confident of getting a good score.. dont compromise on step 1 score just because of securing clinical electives.

Many IMGs/FMGs are required to complete 1 year of Internship/Core/Elective rotations after graduating from medical school. Foreign medical schools may approve all or a portion of these rotations can be completed in the US. ACA

US Physician supervised insured hands-on clinical rotations are available for US/Foreign/International medical graduates that have completed all Internship/Core/Elective rotations.

The main purpose these rotations is for medical graduates to obtaining US hands-on clinical experience, network with residency programs and US Physicians and obtain Clinical Evaluations and LORs.

Hands-on US clinical experience is preferred by residency programs over observership and research rotations. There are numerous research articles on the selection criteria for residency that rank hands-on USCE higher.

Here you go.. icahn.mssm.edu/education/student-resources/resources-for-current-students/registrar/electives/foreign-visiting-students

I applied without step1 score. They don't require step1 for electives but do require a toefl score.. if you intend to apply for april-may you should take toefl as soon as possible so that you can complete your application in time, the earlier the better.

hey.. bugging you again!! But I got the date for toefl.. latest available is 9th november.. so dont think will be applying to elective before november end.. do I still have a good cchance for getting the slot in april-may?? My entire further planning depends on that slot.. so was wondering is it still worth applying there n spending 1000 dollars on application when I know it might get rejected

Applying in november end for electives in april-may would be too late... atleast for Mt Sinai. Almost all the IM electives would probably be filled by then

Post Urgent

Hey Prateek

I'm am currently doing my final year medicine in India ...
would like to do clerkship in Mt.Sinai , I jst read a post which said this-

" Just spoke with another IMG from Jordan than completed one elective rotation in Mount Sinai NYC. He shared with me that he had a great experience practicing clinical skills under the supervision of Cardiology Physicians. During his 4 weeks stay he managed to work with 3 different Physicians and secured a total of 3 LORs.

Therefore the LORs obtained were most likely "cookie cutter" versions and not personalized to what he was able to show during his rotation. "

Is this a good option ?? Is it possible to get 4 LOR's in 4 weeks ?? or is it better to go for 1 LOR for 4 weeks ??
Will 1 LOR be sufficient/carry good amount of weightage in my resume and help me secure/confer me better chances of gaining residency ??

Hi I wanted to know in one of the forms for Mt. Sinai clerkships, they ask you to include your core clerkships (and dates) done before the start of the elective .. I have done my rotations In different semesters on different dates so how should I write the dates ? Thank you
