If you are doing it through their Harrington Program (Latin American & Caribbean students), you get one by default from the director of such program. I don't know if it's the same for people who apply for observerships through a different way.

Besides that, observers usually ask for LoRs to the attendings they were with.

Hope this helps.

Hi, the fee is correct but I don't know about the $1,000 for each rotation, I knew that it was $400 each month. How much time you want and which rotation is your choice. I don't know if the cost is going to be more next year but I don't think is going to be too much.
About the slots full could be probably true because the application for the months from June to November was until January and the application from the months of December to May is until July 31st. So maybe you could still apply but for next year.
Anyway the mail of the contacr person on the website should give all the information you need to apply.

Hello,
I am not from a carribean school so I won't be eligible for the Harrington Program right? Where do I see the deadlines for the application? I don't see it on their website for observers. I am an IMG from India graduated this year. I just emailed the departments (Internal Medicine and Neurology) asking them if they can take me in for an observership. Did I do the right thing?
Thanks any help is appreciated.

Yes, you won't have access trough Harrington but the same department have a Global Observership, so you can ask them about that. So i have seen observer from all over the world
Good luck with that.

Thanks man. I am applying for June of next year as the application deadline for before that has already passed. How strict are they in the selection process ?
If they are strict then I may need to apply to other places for backup. I am applying very early so do you think I have a chance ?

Default Hello

Hi, I am going to do the observership on the months of June and July and I obviously have a lot of questions.

Can anyone help me about the clothes I can use at the Hospital, they said in a letter that women have to use blouse and slacks, but I really want to know if maybe I can use Drill Pants?
Also is pretty difficult to know what shoes use, because they said I canŽt use heel, sandals, or sneakers ... then I was thinking I can usea flats, loafers or oxford Shoes, but I am not pretty sure of that because in my country we use to wear crocs.

I will appreciate any answer that help me ... Thanks and Have an excellent day ....

P.S: if anyone is going to be there on the same months I will be, it will be awesome to meet you

Send a Email to Mrs. Cata. Usually she answers it with 1-2 days.

I am going to the Harringtons' observership program from June to November/2014.

Default observership at miller SOM

Hey everyone, im applying to miller SOM obervership for two months. i had a couple of queries and id be grateful if somebody could help me.
firstly, is the experience good and worthy of 1000 dollars a month because it is quite expensive for observership. how valuable would it be as USCE?
secondly, do we get only one lor from the program director if we are going there for two months, or is it two months= two lor because ill be doing it in separate fields for each month.
thirdly, can someone guide me how expensive is the accomodation near uni of miami.
THANK YOU

Has anyone applied for the next "December to May" period? If so, have any of you been notified of results of the application process since they supposedly should be available starting 9/15?

Does anyone know if you receive an email letting you know whether you've been accepted OR rejected ?
I only received an email from them when they received my documents telling me that the documents were complete and I know we're supposed to wait till the end of September before calling to check on our applications if we hadn't heard from them. Anyone know anything about this?

Hey all, I got accepted for January. Did anyone else over here get their acceptance for Jan 2015? Also has anyone ever rotated at the university of miami hospital? is it true that the doctors change after ever 4-5 days so it'd be a problem networking with an individual doctor? Thank you.

@Joseph, i have emailed them for observership in the GI deptt. for the same month as yours.

Would you please share the details like what had you written in the email, the eligibility criteria for the same, the fee structure, documents required and when to apply?
Thank you.

Default Observership at University of Miami

Hey Ketamine19, I applied to the observership via the Harrington program, which requires to send all your papers before the end of July if you want to rotate for the period from December to May.. So I guess you're applying late now.. Maybe you can apply for the period from June to November...
In anyway, you need to pay 1000$ for the month, pass TOEFL with a minimum of 79/120, 3 lors from your university, your transcripts , etc...

Ok. And regarding the lors, should they be strictly from the university or could they be from the doctors who i have worked with?

To Josephha,
I'm gathering for the required documents,
do you know what's the difference between
hematology vs hematology team
oncology vs oncology team
etc.
these are what I have to chose when writing the application form
thank you

I have been selected for internal medicine for jan 2015. Can anyone who has been to miller som tell me how internal med is there? I am thinking of changing my rotation to cardio which in my opinion is more competitive. Please guide if you have any inputs. Thanks im advance.

Hey guys?

how tough is it to get accepted here for observership?
about how much time in advance should ine apply?
do you need TOEFL score?
Do I have more chance for being from a Latin Americal medical school?

I dont know they keep getting tougher, ive seen really qualified people get rejected i think its more like a lottery.

You do need toefl unless you're american or have something that says you know english ( a certification from an accredited place)

they have periods to apply for example for the july - nov period yo need to apply before january 31st and for Dec - June before July 31st ... last time i checked.

they have a global observership and one for latin america and the caribbean so yea!

The most determining factor imo, is how complete your paperwork is. You need TOEFL ,only if you haven't passed a USMLE step or if you don't have proof that you've studied in English in the medical school (this is from the packet they sent me). I had all three but I don't know how strict they are about it because I met some ppl there who could hardly speak English at all. Most of the participants were from Latin America, as it was a program that initially was intended fro Latin American doctors and medical students. Just get all your paperwork together in time and you'll get in, hopefully. Good Luck.

And the fees are a $1000/month which is relatively cheap compared to other programs but Miami is not a cheap place to stay.

I think you're probably right because another student from the UK that was there told me she paid the same as I did but a South American fellow who had done the observership last year told me she paid much less.

Please if any IM who has been to Miller school of Medicine ... Share with us ur experience and whether they give LOR or not bec the cordinator is usuallu non-commital in her relpies regardign ths subject. It says itz between u and the attending, which is ok but we need to know whether the attendings usually give LOR or not in that schoool.

I'm currently here, yes you can get LOR you can ask your attending /fellow, the program gives you one by default based on your evaluations from the rotation. Is kinda hands on depending on your doctor also you get to write progress notes and h&p on the system (as a medstudent of course)

I am IMG but I am not applying thru the harrison program. I'm applying thru IMG observership program.

I got initial acceptance for Surgery( General and cardiothoracic) starting from july till mid Sep.
I wanted to ask about the immunization record and more importantly the insurance bec theu quote some massive numbers (20000- 50000), so I wanna know what's that all about. If anyone can help I'll appreciate it.

I'll be there in June! Colorrectal surgery. I rented an apt in the Four Ambassadors Towers, in Brickell.
For all of you still waiting for a reply... Just call the office and ask. That's what I did.
